Hello,

Me and my wife are arriving in Milan on May 25 night. We are planning to stay in a hotel just by the train station. Next day we would like to see Milan for half a day and then head to Venice on May 26th around noon.
We have a flight on 28th 10:30 AM from Marco Polo airport.
For our stay in Venice, we have booked a hotel in Scaltenigo which is 20 mins drive from Venice.
Can you please suggest which would be a better option train or renting a car ?
I see that lot of folks are averse to renting a car, but I feel that car will give me more flexibility and will be relatively cheaper . Ofcourse I can take a ferry or any public transport to the places in Venice where car cannot reach.
Please advise.

Thanks,
Joe

So you are going to have half a day in milan and one full day in Venice? Doesn't really seem worthwhile. If you land in milan and can get to Venice that same evening you can get 2 full days in Venice, which is enough to nearly search the surface. Also with limited time its probably worth staying in Venice rather than commuting.

I agree with above. .in that timeframe I'd concentrate on one or the other.

Anyway..to answer your question. ..train.You won't have the time to see stuff between the two cities, and car is useless in both Milan and in particular Venice.

I totally agree with above, either Milan or Venice (for me, definitely Venice). And travel by train. And if you really really have to visit both places for a very short amount of time, please book accommodation in Venice, and not 20 minutes outside of Venice. You have so little time already :-(.

I don't understand why you've chosen to fly to Milan if you really want to see Venice. The answer may be "a cheap flight", but look at the time and expense you're having to incur now. You're also wasting time coming in to central Milan, which you have no need to do.

In my opinion it would have been much better for you to go direct to Venice, and that may still be the better option even if you can't change your flights. As it is, you're allowing only part of the 26th and then all day on 28th to see Venice, which is well below the minimum I would usually recommend (four full days). Staying 20 minutes outside Venice is also counterproductive when you have so little time.

A car is likely to be a positive disadvantage, getting out of Milan and then dropping it off in Venice. Why do you need to be flexible on such a tight schedule? Train is the more obvious option, but I would seriously consider booking a more central hotel, no matter what the extra cost.

This sounds like an afterthought, hastily added to a longer trip.

If that's the case, you might consider posting your whole itinerary, so we can consider ways of tinkering with it to make your last few days in Italy a bit more worthwhile.

If you stay outside of Venice, you'll be just another day-tripper, seeing it only at its worst--that is, only when it is filled to the brim with other day-trippers (and all doing the exact same things in their terribly limited time). Not at night when it empties, or early in the morning, before it fills.

Here's something that's true of most places but truer of Venice than any other place I know: if you only scratch the surface, the surface will gladly scratch back. It's the people who spend that least amount of time in Venice who seem to have the worst impressions of it.

Please reconsider.

Thank you all for your help. I wont be able to extend my stay this time around. However based on your inputs, I booked my accommodation in Venice and I am taking the train.

Thanks again.
