Hi all,

Can anyone help? Me and my boyfriend are hoping to visit Italy for the first time in July/August this year, however, we can't make up our minds where we should go. I've always wanted to go to Sorrento as it sounds so beautiful but I know that it can be very expensive. We're basically looking for somewhere that we can experience the beautiful coastal scenery, eat some great food, drink some wine and pretty much relax for a week. Ideally, we are looking for somewhere similar to Sorrento but without the expense.

Can anyone recommend any other places to visit? We've heard some good things about Cinqueterre but as we've never been to Italy, we're not really sure where to start! Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks x

Hello!! I have to suggest Puglia and specifically Cisternino!!
Cisternino is one of the most amazing destinations in Italy, and you will be immersed in the daily life of a typical Mediterranean town: one of the 100 most beautiful little towns in Italy, it is in fact a medieval town, andit has been just declared Slow City.
The beautiful emerald beaches are only 15 minutes away, and the country side with its olive and grape fields abound; the scenery is truly majestic with the pictureseque trulli popping all over the country side.
If you're interested in having a beautiful time in Italy to enjoy the slow pace, great food, amazing wine, and colorful and lively towns people who will make you feel at home, come and visit us!

Visits to nearby towns like Ceglie (15 Km), Martina Franca (9 Km), Ostuni (12 Km) and Locorotondo (6 Km), the Roman excavation of Egnazia with its beautiful mosaic are just 12 km away.
There is a Dolmen in the area and plenty of beautiful churches.
The marvellous Baroque centre of Lecce is a little over an hour away, the centre of Southern Italy, Bari, is about an hour drive from here, and in 45 minutes you can roam through the fabulous fish market of Taranto and its Greek museum, on the Ionic Sea.

We also have two properties for rent and we will be more than happy to have you as our guests!
"La Casetta"is an apartment nestled in one of the small, white washed alleys of Cisternino's Historic Quarter.
The other property is in the countryside, 10 minutes by feet to Cisternino, and a gorgeous last model Jacuzzi in the back orchard!
I hope to have been helpful, for any other info just let me know!!!

Hello If you want to stay in Sorrento stay in a Bed and Breakfast .. You ca found a price from Euro 30 for a single room to Euro 60 for a double. ( Using Google research look B&B in Sorrento) Further in this forum reasearch the message of "michealmores " ( just put the name in search). He was talking about a place abive Amalfi at Euro 17 per night ( but with 10 minutes walking ). Ciao Giancarlo (italyinexpensively.com)

Sorrento is not expensive! Don't know where you heard that. Positano, yes. Capri, of course. Sorrento, no.

Ignore #1, who is sadly just advertising. Puglia does offer great beaches, but will be packed in July / August (as will most of Italy, to be honest). If you did choose Puglia, opt for the seaside rather than inland towns, which tend to close down a bit plus get very hot. Traffic is awful as everyone wants to get to the beaches, so if you come, choose to stay somewhere like Gallipoli or Otranto where you can walk to the beaches. Puglia's more for second-timers I would hazard, as the lack of spoken English means that it can be difficult for those visiting Italy for the first time.

Sorrento is lovely and not expensive. Positano is my personal favourite and is more expensive, being more up-market. When I visited, I stayed in a tiny place called Furore, on the main cliff road between Positano and Amalfi. Not expensive and had a bathing platform so you could swim in the sea direct from the rocks (Locando del Fjiordo).

We stayed at this B&B last month (more like a guesthouse/mini-hotel as private bathroom and lift) Relais Francesca. It's in Piano di Sorrento which is two Circumvesuviana stops from Sorrento town (about 5 mins) and was €75 a night for a double with breakfast. Very nice family restaurant nearby - not at all expensive!!! Good base for Pompeii too.

Cinque Terre will be much more expensive than Sorrento. If you're looking for cheaper spots, you should head south to Sicily, or even cheaper... Calabria.

Whilst you are in Amalfi. Italys beautifull part being expensive and that. We found a great place for 20 euro each a night. They have a kitchen, BBQ, Free net and laundry for only 3 euro. It is very clean and they make you feel at home. The views are amazing and your budget won't be a problem. Their local bar do coffee and breakfast snacks for 2 euro.
