Hi all, I have just come across a travel report (https://www.fodors.com/community/europe/tr-two-weeks-in-campania-with-the-children-795022/ ) with a rather negative opinion on focusing too much on Sorrento.... so I just try to think whether it is possible to avoid two nights in Sorrento (before and after the ferry to/from Capri). Do you think it is practical at all to consider say staying to Positano and travel to ferry to Capri from there (using either bus or morning ferry Positano to Sorrento). And similarly, on way back whether it is possible to embark from ferry and then use some public transportation to get in Pompeii and have overnight stay in Pompeii? Or it is not practical at all? What do you think?

I can't imagine why Sorrento would not suit you - yes it is full of tourists and you will be there in peak season but the town is pleasant enough if just a bit unexciting.. The Circumvesuviana train runs every half hour from Sorrento via Pompei to Naples. As always the usual warning - there is no shelter at all at Pompei, so be prepared for a hot hot day (or if you are unlucky, sweeping rain!).
Have you checked ferry schedules on line? - there is at least one direct ferry daily from Amalfi and Positano to Capri

Thanks for your note mike9. I just read a travel report that stressed the impression of Sorrento as too touristy and uninteresting one, but I needed second opinion, that is what I am getting, thank you. As to the ferries from Positano, yes I have seen those on the https://www.lucibello.it/ site, but was not clear whether they do one-way transfer to Capri as opposed to round trips, so that we could return from Capri to Sorrento instead of heading back to Positano.
