I'll be visiting Italy at the end of the year for 20 days (19 nights), starting at December 22. I will be travelling with my girlfriend, and we like to explore cities by walking, and tried to fit some nature as well (day trips outside the cities).

I have made a basic itinerary for the entire duration, and I would like to get some feedback:

  1. I depart at Bergamo and spend the night there.
  2. 2 nights at Venice, which are two full days [skipping Verona due to lack of time, for now]
  3. Going to a day trip in Belgona, and then to Florence.
4.** 5 night** in total in Florence to see: Florence itself, and day trips to Cinque Terre, Pisa, Siena, Montirrigioni
  4. 5 nights in Rome. Making a trip to Tivoli from Rome (half a day-day)
  5. 4 nights in Naples, to see: Naples, Capri, Amalfi, Sorrento.
    7.** 1 night** in Millan
  6. 1 night in Bergamo - a flight back.

I'd really appreciate the feedback,
Amir

This is mostly centre-north Italy, not centre-south...only Naples could be considered south,

Anyway irt is all possible. The day trips are far too many for me,but you can decide that when you are there. Also there is not much point going to places like Amalfi,Capri,CT etc. at Christmas..it will probably be cold and rainy.

Personally I'd drop Milan (waste of time going there just for a night).I'd add another night to Venice.....if you really want to see Milan then add another night there so at least you have a full day,and take one off Naples or Florence.

Belgona (Italy): never heard about. Where is it?

I think the Op means Bologna.....

Does that mean your visit to Bologna is on Christmas Day? It isn't the day I would choose to move between hotels.

Where's Belgona?

Crazy if it's Bologna on Christmas Day. Far too many day trips.Bad choices given the usual weather. Does not sound like a fun trip at all.

Going to a day trip in Belgona

Why? What does Bologna have that Venice and Florence don't?
But if you insist, you might as well lug your luggage and make it an overnight stop, rather than backtrack to Venice.

Your day trips from Florence leave you one day for the city itself. Arguably, day trips make less sense in general in the winter. You'll be trading your home base in a city full of indoor attractions for places where you'll spend more time outdoors (if only because your hotel will be back in Florence).

Same goes for Naples. Only more so.
Because those day trips are even more outdoors-y.

I just don't see the logic in selecting such interesting cites as home bases, only to virtually ignore them in favor of day trips.

Oh, and if you want to see Italian religious pageantry at its finest, head to the Christmas Day service in the largest church in town. Hang near the back in case you don't want to stick around for the whole service.

Christmas Day also makes for a good "wander around" day wherever you'll be.

I understood (Op may confirm) that he wants to go to Bologna in the morning, spend the day there and then go on to Florence in the evening?

But why???

Again, what does Bologna have that Venice and/or Florence don't?
Good food? That seems to be its reputation outside of Italy: foodie's paradise.

Its a good question..I guess its the food reputation too....

There is nothing of great interest for the average tourist in Bologna. Its probably a good city to live in.....
