My wife and I are starting our month long trip to Italy with a 5 day stay in Bergamo, starting June 19. We are interested in planning a day trip to Lake Como using the train and possibly a boat as well. We would like some feedback on which towns along the eastern coast of Lake Como might be most worthy of our time. Right now we have focused our research on Varenna but want to be open to other possibilities. We'd like to spend a day in a town that has great views both of the lakes and the mountains, interesting options for coffee and lunch and dinner, opportunities for a moderate "hike" (i.e. walk on a path) and a visit to gardens that are open for viewing. Local museums or church would be considered for a quick visit if they had something of particular interest.

Varenna has the advantage of a good train connection. We've thought about taking the train to Lecco, and then the boat on to Varenna, and making the return trip entirely by train. But we are wondering if we should be considering Bellagio instead, or one of the other small towns along the eastern edge of the lake. Bellagio doesn't have as good of a train connection from Bergamo, but we could use the boat for part of the trip and enjoy the scenery.

There are not many boats between Lecco and Bellagio/Varenna. Go by train up to Varenna and change there to one of the numerous boats or car ferries to Bellagio, Menaggio or Cadenabbia (Villa Carlotta).

You may also go by boat up to Como and turn back to Bergamo by train or bus via Monza

I have never done a trip from Bergama to Como but I have taken the train from Bergamo to Milan and then Milan to Como.

Very easy trip.

IMHO, Varenna slays some of its higher-profile neighbours as a relaxing, reasonably-priced place to stay. Local ferry connections for daytrips and also for moving on, make things pretty easy for most travelers. In Varenna, we felt like we were in a more authentic part of Italy, a place not yet totally overrun by commercial tourism. Hope all goes well and
bonne chance.
I am done. The end.

5 days in Bergamo?
I have no idea what you'll do (do you?).
Except day-trip elsewhere for 4 days.

Fortunately, Lombardy/Veneto is a cornucopia so Bergamo is a good base for day trips.

You're less than an hour from Milan or Brescia (in opposite directions), less than 2 hours from Verona. The charming but busy little town of Peschiera del Garda (at the foot of Lake Garda) is between Brescia and Verona.

Oh shoot, I wonder if I'm confusing Desenzano del Garda with Peschiera del Garda. Hopefully, Chiara will come along to enlighten us.

Lecco is a lot closer, on the eastern "leg" of Lake Como, than Varenna. And Varenna is about as far as Verona, by train. But there's a lot more to do and see in Verona. Unless Chiara corrects me (she's a native, I'm an expat).

You may be thinking of focusing on Lake Como, but I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of focusing on Lake Garda, especially its northern areas.

Thank you for your useful response. We're not too worried about 5 days in Bergamo. It's where we begin our trip after a long international fly, a day or two will be used up in recovering from the rigors of air travel, and just exploring the town. We have an apartment in the Alta Città, and anticipate a day or two of relaxing, enjoying food, wine, coffee, etc before starting day trips. Varenna is definitely on our list, specifically because of gardens we want to visit there. We also may combine that with a trip across to Menaggio on the other side of Lake Como, to visit the gardens at Villa Vigoni. Verona and Cremona are also possibilities for day trips. And I'm interested in Trento as well, although that is a longer train ride. I'll check out Peschiera/Desenzano del Garda as another possibility. I'm sure we'll find plenty to do before we move on to Bologna to start language school. Our month long trip ends with 3 days in Orta San Guilio on Lago Orta -- went enjoyed our stay there two years ago, and finally with a brief day in Milan.

...and don't forget Lake Iseo and Camonica Valley (with Capo del Ponte rock carvings) as well as the other Bergamasque (formerly textile or cheesemaking) Valleys.
