Hi,

I am planning to take the bus from Viterbo to Tarquinia on Saturday. I have a small suitcase. How do I pay the surcharge for luggage - should I just buy another ticket of the same fare class? I most likely will take the bus after the ticket office closes so don't think anyone will be there for assistance.

Thanks,

Ansh

It should be free if the item is broadly the size you would take as hand baggage on a plane. Otherwise you are supposed to buy a second ticket. I don't use their buses very often but I am not aware of anyone actually paying for anything which you are capable of carrying - many buses used to have a luggage compartment under the floor, and the last time I used that - quite a few years ago - I wasn't charged despite buying my ticket at a booking office. If you are prepared to have an unusually vigilant driver, I would be tempted to act the "stupid foreigner" and look surprised if you are charged.

Thanks Mike, that's helpful. I am actually surprised by the Cotral buses so far in that nobody checks anyone's passes or tickets. I have always bought the correct fare ticket so far and always have validated it on board bus I have been asked for it by the driver.

Cheers

Just to report back - I just decided to buy the extra ticket for the luggage. The driver did not bat an eyelid as I brought my suitcase on board as opposed to the storage. It just fit into the overhead space. He glanced at my ticket while validating it - not sure if he would have said anything if I didn't have the extra ticket. Anyways, what a beautiful journey.

Have you checked out Hallo Bamboo's Minor Sights website about all the things to do in Northern Lazio?? - Etruscan places, thermal springs etc. You'll need more than a weekend!

To be honest, it's entirely because of his website that I find myself here... yes, loads to see here (was in Viterbo for 3 nights before Tarquinia). Saw the Etruscan necropolis today - the painted tombs are definitely among the most fascinating things I have ever seen.
