Te journey time via Toblach - Bruneck - Brixen - Bozen - Kronmetz - Trient is about the same, but it costs more because the itinerary is longer. There are 3 daily connections:

Cortina dp 8.05 - Roma Termini ar 16.29
Cortina dp 10.05 - Roma Termini ar 18.28
Cortina dp 13.05 - Roma Termini ar 21.45
Change at Toblach, Franzensfeste and Bozen or Bologna

Thanks all! This trip be my honeymoon shortly after the wedding. We are visiting other cities, but wanted to stop by Cortina for the Domomites before heading back home (California).

So to answer your question, that's just how the timing worked out for us. Hopefully there will be some early snowfall for us to enjoy!

How will you be getting to Cortina in the first place?

The plan is to take trains and buses for the whole trip. Maybe taxis if necessary.
LA > Rome > Florence > Venice > Cortina > (return to Rome > LA).

Well, if you're getting to Cortina from Venice, why not leave via Bolzano, see more country and eliminate backtracking.

And Rome > Florence > Venice ... all perfect without a car. Trains are excellent.

I'll consider it. Thanks for the insight!

I fully second Jingili. Move from Cortina to Bozen in the afternoon and sleep there. This Tyrolian city (and it's Oetzi Museum) is well worth a visit. Take then a direct train to Rome (ar 4 1/2 hrs later).
