Yes - that works - you could have a very good week driving through Tuscany and as far south as Orvieto, then back to Pisa via Volterra - say - with very little to no backtracking. Accommodation and parking will be challenges in August.

Could look something like this Google Map.

Where are you going in Sicily?

Its a large island with a lot of different places to see.Obviously in a couple of days you will be able to see very little of it....

Yes - you could do that - I guess your challenge is getting a balance you're happy with between a Tuscan driving tour and time in Sicily.

BTW, in terms of your Cinque Terre stay - two full days - I would suggest the following:

  • Day 1 - buy the CT Rail Pass and do a hop-on hop-off between the three more southern villages (Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia), stopping at say Manarola for a beer at sunset, then back to La Spezia for dinner

  • Day 2 - go very early to Vernazza, and do the walk from there to Monterosso (fairly easy and lovely), and then return to La Spezia mid-afternoon, and take the P or No 11 Bus from Controviale Garibaldi (from memory) out to Portovenere (only about 25 minutes or so) - a great coastal spot with nice views, and again, have a sunset beer there - maybe dinner.

Buses run from Portovenere very late back to La Spezia. A nice use of two days.

This morning I talked to a woman who just returned from Cinque Terre. She said it was rammed with tourists last week. I can't imagine what it's like in August.

I can't understand why you'd go all the way to Sicily for just a couple of nights - I think you've seriously underestimated the sightseeing there. And take lucapal's advice above - he lives there.
Assuming you've opted for just 2 nights in Florence, consider going by bus to Siena - they run hourly and take 75 minutes -and the following day hire your car for a couple of days drive to Rome's Fiumicino airport. Check the search box at the top of this page for suggested itineraries along the S2, but along or nearby are Pienza, Montepulciano, Bolsena, Viterbo to name just a few places - if you can find a vacancy at this late stage, consider a night or two in an agriturismo (farm stay). Make sure you know where to dropyour car at Fiumicino - most car hire bases are in long stay multistorey car parks B and C. Then fly Fiumicino to Sicily if yoy've decided not to spend time in Rome.

Plan AT LEAST 1 week for Sicily or forget it.
Even if you want to visit only Catania and surroundings, 2 nights only are ridiculous.

OP has their return flight from Sicily so little point in telling them to not bother going.

Some people simply want to say they've been, who are we to judge.

Every group has its own dynamics, if you can't see the idiot then it's probably you.
Enjoy yourself, it's later than you think :-D
