My husband and I are traveling into Milan for 3 weeks in July with our boys who are 8 and 10. We are very active and adventurous and would like to experience some hiking, local culture and sightseeing. We could hire a car, although we were thinking train would be a great way to get around and see the country. We are fortunate to have a fairly open budget at this time in our lives which was not the case when I visited Italy solo in college. We love the outdoors and nature, hiking, great food, and memorable experiences as a family. The kids are very adventurous. Thank you!

Any reason why you picked Milan as a base? Perhaps not the best place for your interests.

We flew in to Milan because we found a very inexpensive flight. We were planning to fly out of Milan to the south of Italy.

This feels like a blank sheet of paper - can you be a bit more specific? You can do those activities in all Italy's 19 regions. Just remember July is high, if not quite peak, season.

Yes, mike.
Plus, I don't really see a question...
"Where should we go"? As Mike suggests, any place that isn't a city will be outdoors and have nature.
Do you have some idea of an itinerary?
Are tickets for Milan already bought?
Where are you planning to fly to in the south?
I ask because once you add the cost of that flight, Milan might not be such a good deal. Especially if there are other major cities, Rome say, closer to where you really want to be. Where is that?
There must be reasons you chose Italy. What are they?
What kinds of outdoors? Mountains, beaches, forests?
And what percentage of your time to you want to spend outdoors, away from some of the most culturally significant cities in Europe?
I wonder if you shouldn't be looking further east, to Slovenia and Croatia, for example, for comparable but less expensive natural beauty. Or, since money isn't a concern, maybe Switzerland...
