We're (young couple) going to Crete in a couple of days.
What we are NOT planning to do:
- night life (not so interested)
- swimming (too cold)
What we ARE planning to do/see:
- beautiful scenery, nature, towns and villages
- maybe a couple of museums, ancient places and stuff like that
- maybe some hiking, but beginners level

We're not sure about camping as it seems its gonna be rather cold (but we have a tent and sleeping bags).

We're hitchhikers and couchsurfers. That means we should set larger towns as a base (its more likely we would find hosts there) and explore interesting places from there by hitchhiking (or maybe we'll take a bus, it depends).

We're arriving to Heraklion by ferry and have a place to stay there for 3 days.
What would you suggest?

CretAquarium! I could have happily spent a day there, and surprisingly, the cafeteria is a great place for lunch when you need more fishwatching energy.
And Chania is lovely. We particularly loved the covered market and the maze of alleys around 1821 Square.

Rethymnon comes a close second to Chania and would make a very pleasant place to stay. Heraklion has some gorgeous beaches that are great for walking in good weather and are quiet but never far from the main road/shops/transport.
The eastern side of the island might be better for warmer, drier weather.

With two weeks I would probably choose 3-4 bases in different parts of the Island, so that you can make day trips from there without having to cover too much ground. Heraklion in the centre, Chania or Rethymnon in the west, Malia or Agios Nikolaos in the east and Ierapetra on the southern coast. All of those places are large (for Crete standards), on the sea, with plenty of restaurants and would make good bases in my opinion.

You can find beautiful scenery and nature, orthodox churches and nice villages all over the island. I dont know however how easy it is to get there whilst hitchhiking. For ancient places, Knossos is a must in my opinion.,
