Hello all. I am going to be travelling from Istanbul to Thessaloniki by bus in a couple of weeks. The buss leaves at 10am and should arrive at 8pm roughly. Can anyone suggest decent budget accommodation near the bus station in Thessaloniki, wherever that may be? I am hoping to get a bus or train the next day out to the towns closest to Meteora, and advice there would be wonderful as well.

Thanks all!

Just for the record, there is a fantastic train leaving Istanbul at 8pm, I think, arriving at Thessaloniki in the morning. It's slightly more expensive that buses (to be exact, it costs 50 euros, one way), but we are talking about comfortable beds, not simple seats, in two bed compartments. Not to mention the accommodation costs you save by spending the night traveling. AND, you'll have a full day at Thessaloniki, not just a couple of hours before hitting the bed (given that you want to leave in the morning heading to Meteora). Anyhow, talking about Meteora, you can, of course, take a bus, but once again I suggest taking the train. If you take the 7:30 one to Palaiopharsala, you'll be there around 10, you'll wait for about 15 minutes, and take a second train going from there to Kalabaka (Meteora). I know it sounds messy, but trust me, it's not, and it's dirt cheap, less than 10 euros. Last, about accommodation in Thessaloniki, the closest hotel to the bus station is a 4-5 stars hotel. The closest hotel to the train station is REX. Check hostelworld and hostelbookers and you'll see what I'm talking about. Do bargain. You've got nothing to lose.

Just for future travellers info, dont have high hopes for nice budget accom in Thessaloniki. We went with a cheap place in the 05 edition of EoaS and I have never seen so much mould in a room in my life! Worse than my brothers fridge! We walked right out and up the road, found somewhere less dodgy...
