I have booked a room for 3 nights after failing to find anything better in our price range in mid July. I'm confused because reviews seem to be either (1) very highly rated from those calling it a hostel and (2) less glowing from those who connsider it a budget hotel. At over e100 a night, not really "budget" in my estimation....Also I'm concerned because a small number of people have encountered problems with being taken to a different hotel even with confirmed reservations. Is it worth it to keep checking with more desirable accommodations to see if they have cancellations while holding this one? I'm aware there are better values outside Fira but we really want to be in the center of things.

Mid July already things are getting packed-full. Try my dear budget hotel in Firostephani Villa Fotini, you might might get lucky and get their last room http://www.santorinivilla.com I think even in July the double would be about 60E ... maybe it is because you are a newbie, but you should know that Firostephani is not "outside" ... it is just the north edge of Fira. It's not even legally a separate town ... it's a 10-minute walk from Fotini to the Fira Square, either on the rimside path or on a less-known flagstoned lane parallel to the main center n-south road. This place is a GEM -- will pick up/deliver to Ferry port free, gives continental breakfast, has USE OF POOL on next-door hotel -- what's not to Love!?!?!
However, they are probably full -- gems like this don't last for latecomers ... then in Fira, let me see -- Hotel S Giorgios is below the square on a street full of similar "pensions" -- they are all similar houses, about 3 stories ... E100 seems a lot for that row, with no pool. Here's a Map http://www.santorini-hotels.info/santorini-island-santorini-map/santorini-fira-map.htm#help -- It's on the same street as #19 and #22 (or else on the Parallel street just to the left) steeply downhill from the square -- #22 New Haroula is down a way but at least has a pool ... if you are OK with being in center of things, I'd check out Dina's place, just down from square, has a pool & sunbathing deck.
