Hi everyone! This is regarding weather in the island of Rhodes.
With so much to recommend in Rhodes there appears to be a nagging problem with temperatures during summer months - there are many reports about the heat. May and September seem to be the best months - September even more so because the sea water is probably warmer than in May due to the warming over the summer months.
The sea water is probably cold in May, but in June the air temperature may be uncomfortably high!
What about early June?
Or is September the only month when both air and sea temperatures are at their best?
Regards

September is likely to be very hot. I would have thought early June would be better, though could still be very hot.

With few exceptions like this years hottest summer since many years, the weather in Rhodes and other Dodecanese islands is not so hot in June, 29-31C degrees can be the highest temperature. Middle of September is the best month to visit the island when it becomes less crowded from package tourism and the temperatures are mild and not so very hot as the previous poster mention.

Many thanks Nicolapicola and rosegr for your prompt responses.
Nicolapicola, you say that "... early June would be better, though could still be very hot." What temperatures do you have in mind for early June? Are they 29-31C degrees as indicated by rosegr?
Regards

Sutravel, everyone has a different idea of what is "very hot". To research actual weather stats you can go to Weather Underground Trip Planner. As you can see, the average high temperature in Rhodes during the 1-15 June period is 79F, or 26C if you think in Celsius. Scroll toward the bottom of the page and you will see actual temperatures on Rhodes from 1997 to 2007. Input other dates if you want to compare June with September.

September is a very busy month. June is decisively better for Rhodes. Temps are unpredictable. However, if I recall the last few years, we have had mini successive heatwaves around the beginning of the school year [Sept 15th], if that at all helps.

Hi Thrym! Hi dianab1!
Thanks for your very useful responses.
If air temperature during 1-15 June is about 26 Centigrade, it would be comfortable for us - we are Indians living in Delhi!! The point is whether the sea water is still too cold for swimming - again we are probably used to slightly warmer water than many travellers from Europe or the USA!! We were in Crete during 16-23 June this year - a year of exceptionally high temperatures I gather. The sea water was just right, but the day temperatures made the beaches hot, and we took to swimming in the late afternoon. That was great. But we couldn't wander about as much as we would have liked to during the day beacuse it was very warm - well above 30 Centigrade I guess. So 26 Centigrade would be very nice for walking around and seeing the sites, but will the sea water be comfortable?
Regards

Hi sutravel,
I have a big smile on my face thinking of an Indian from Delhi worried about the heat in Greece. :-)) When I was in Delhi during February 1999, the temperature was about the same as Greece during June. How you manage later in the year when it really gets hot I can't imagine.
Air temperatures in May, June, and September are unpredictable. In May it can still be cool, especially in the evenings. This year in the Cyclades it began to get hot around the middle of June, just as I was leaving. When I returned at the end of August, it was still hot right through the first week of September. I have been on the Greek Islands all the months between May and September - my favourite time is June.
Water temperatures at the beginnning of June will be a little cooler than you experienced in Crete this year, but comfortable for swimming. By September water temperatures are just about perfect. You can swim in May (I do), but it it still a bit chilly that early in the season.
Sutravel, please do not see air temperatures as something 'exact' and 'predictable' as every year is different. I have once had a heath wave in May with temps between 40-44° during 2 weeks while the year after it was only 21-24° end of June/early july.
If warm sea temps is that important to you but you want to avoid too hot air temps, why don't you consider early October? We were in Rhodes (and Symi) past 1 to 11 October and had day temps around 27-28° and the sea water had a very nice 22-23°.

Hi Thrym!
That is a very interesting response!! June - a convenient time from the point of view of holidays - appears to be an acceptable month, on the whole, for visiting Rhodes.
We left Delhi for a trip this summer, with the temperatures here at 44 degrees C. After visiting Crete (16-23 June 2007) we went straight to Athens and encountered a heat wave - temperatures crossed 40 degrees C. A poor escape from the Delhi summer!
In end May in 2005, Paris was unexpectedly warm, and even Cambridge, in U.K., was very warm in mid-June that year. All this has made my wife very wary of Europe in June or any other summer month!!
Many thanks for your sincere responses so promptly made. And for surmising that an Indian from Delhi should be able to bear June in Rhodes without complaint!!! Regards
