We are planning on taking the bus from Hania to Paleohora tomorrow. We definitely also want to check out Elafonissi beach, but realize it is a pain to get there from Paleochora by bus. The boat apparently runs only on Wednesday. Can you only get there via rental car or moped perhaps and how? Do you have to go way up north before you can cross over?
And how about getting from Paleochora to the beaches around Sougia? Is there a daily boat?
Any other recommendations for the area around Paleochora while we are down there?

Unfortunately the boat from Paleochora to Elafonissi runs till 30/09, but it might be worth checking with Anendyk (tel. 28210-95511 or 28210-91221) you might be lucky it may run as the weather is still good. It should leave then at 10 am and return at 16 pm. Otherwise renting a car or bike might be an option, although you have to drive up north first as there's no coastal road.
From Paleochora to Sougia there's a boat Monday-Thursday at 9.45 hrs and Friday-Sunday at 8.30 hrs. This boat stops in Sougia and then continues to Agia Roumeli. Return from Agia Roumeli at 16.45 hrs, departure time from Sougia to Paleochora at 17.30 hrs from Monday-Thursday. Friday-Sunday it leaves Agia Roumeli at 17.30 and Sougia 18.15 hrs. Again check with above number from Anendyk.
