Hi there, where will you be coming in to Greece at? if you only have one day, you should go to some place where it is near so you have time to enjoy where you will be going. It sounds like you may be going to Thessaloniki first, so you could go to any of the islands off that part of the coast. In Thessaloniki is not nice in the harbour. You have to get out on the coast or an island or up a little to Kalkidiki etc. Almost anywhere you go in Greece the waters are beautiful. Skopelos, Skiathos etc. are fantastic. have fun.

There are flights from Athens airport to Mykonos Island. Athens dp 16.45, return 1 day later with the same plane. There are also ferries from Rafina, a harbour very close to Athens airport, dp 7.35 and 16.30 Myk ar 12.10, 21.15 dp 13.15 Rafina ar 18.00. Check timetables with www.gtp.gr, www.olympicailines.gr

I don't know what times etc. but there should be flights to Santorini also, I did fly there in Dec. one time. Actually it may be more interesting than Mykonos at this time of year, But both places have their own charm and beautiful waters and sight seeing things. have fun. Maybe Aegean will know something.

Vince, it is hard to help you when you are not exact in your information. You say "one day." What does this mean?

Does it mean you fly in at 0800, and have only until 2100 that night? Or does it mean you fly in at 0800, and have until 0800 the next morning?? In other words, can you stay overnight??

Also, is your interest the Aegean sea itself? Or just any waters surrounding GReece? Or the "look" of a Greek island? Or a port town on an Island??

If you do not need an island, you might enjoy taking a bus down to Sounion, which has a magnificent ruin of a Temple overlooking the water... Busses go there to view the sunset. You can Google "image" and Sounion, and see what I mean. It is easy to get there without plane or ferry.

Please be more specific and we can advise you better.

Vince, why did you P-M me with your arrival-departure time?? I think EVERYONE needs to know this if youare to get helpful info!!

You tell me you will arrive 9:30 AM in Athens on one day, and depart from Athens the next day at 16:15. (If u want people to do your flight-schedule research FOR you, it would have been thoughtful for you to say what the exact dates are, because espeically this time fo year flights differ depending on which day of the week. Why so stingy with info if you want help??

Since a click on your name shows you are from China, it may take u longer to get through passport control than if you were US or EU... so u can't count on catching a flight to an island before 12 noon. And for you to take off the next day at 16:15, you need to get a flight back arriving no later than 1300, just to be safe. In November, winds can delay flights.

SANTORINI would seem to be iffy. Aegean appears to have a daily fllight leaving at 1220 arriving 1305. But no flight BACK that arrives before your international outbound flight. Olympic appears to have a 7:10 am flight arriving 800 am -- if you don't mind getting up in at the crack of dawn, and then having a SEVEN-HOUR wait at the airport (!!!). However, you COULD arrive, check your bag in early for your flight -- then take a metro to central Athens (45 minutes), and rush up the Acropolis and down, and get a Metro back at 1300 to make your 16:15 flight.

I don't think you'd do much better with another island since Santorini, being the most touristic probably has the best flight schedule.

Maybe other TT posters will have another idea.

Take a boat to Aegina island and stay there one night.

You have great views of the Aegean [and even the island of Aegina in fact] from the Athens coast, - Faliro or Alimos, on any clear day- that is, the Aegean can be appreciated even from Athens,as travelerjan previously stated. Especially so, if you have an outbound international flight the following day and if it's almost winter.
Take today for example, - a wind ban, cold temperatures accompanied with rain. Do you think you would be able to distinguish the Aegean blue with the horizon better in Santorini than Aegina for example? I personally wouldn't take the risk, but if you must insist on an island, then as Harvery states, Aegina is a relatively good choice.
