Hello people,

I've heard that due to current situation in Greece, it is not possible to withdraw money from ATM , and those who want , they have to stop in queues, and only can take a small amount , is it true ?
What is the best way (fast and cheap ) to send money to Greece now, for someone who doesn't live in Greece and has no bank account there ?

Greetings to all

Last week the restrictions did not apply to foreign bank accounts, but please check whether that's still the case.

Aren't the banks still closed? The only way I can think of is Western Union, but I don't know how much they charge.

Hello Tempelton, we are not there yet but we plan to visit soon. My experience with Western Union is that it is a very predatory company and charges exorbitant fees to the people that receive the money. This is my experience in three countries: Belize, the former Yugoslavia and the Occupied Territories of Palestine, especially the Gaza district. I don't know about Greece. Check with Western Union at a locality in which you live for some information. Also, ask the person that you are hoping to send money to what their options are there. Also, according to Richard Falk, an economist, the people who are having trouble not being able to get adequate amounts of money out are small businesses who often have to pay their workers. Big businesses seem to have a system of their own. Check Richard Faulk's interview on Greece on Democracynow.org. Its quite extensive.

I just called to western union , they said you can only send 60 Euros to a client bank account, it means if you want to send 600 Euros, you should send on 10 days, everyday 60 euros ...
The person I am sending to, is not living there, and have no bank account there , unfortunately the only way is to find friends there who can give money and recieve it in another country , bank account.

Does the person not have a bank account in another country there is no limit on taking money from foreign bank accounts from ATM's yes there might be queues but it will still be quicker than finding a western union and sorting out the transaction.

That's interesting because here in Switzerland we have the message that in the moment it's not possible to send any money to Greece via Western Union. Greece is deactivated. But we do only cash transfers and are not able to send it to a bank account.

If the person is able to travel, it might be a possibility to send money to FYR Macedonia or Turkey...

Contact this person and ask what about the ATMs at the area he is in. Not all ATMs are drained and not all ATMs have queues! If he has a card connecting to a foreign account there is not withdrawal limit from this account bar this his bank always impose.
