Hey, do you know how often the trains from Athenes to Kambalaka (meteora) leaves?
Will it be better to go by bus? From where?
I will arrive tomorrow at the ariport at 10.30 a.m. and the main reason on going to Grece is for Meteora, but if the trains (or buses) leaves in non apropiate schedules for the plans, I will like to star in Greece. Do you know a good price hotel-hostel there (clean), also (Meteora and Athenes)?
In Meteora, are the temples far away one from each other? Are there internal buses?
I will thank for your help
Regards,
José Antonio

Try www.ose.gr for train timetables, and if you can't find what you need there, go to www.bahn.de.

In Athens, a nice, cheap, clean hotel located not far from the Metro line is the Tempi Hotel. Check it out here:

Take a Proastiakos train from the airport to Neratziotissa - Athens Larisa Railway station, change there to a train with destination Thessaloniki and change again at Paleofarsalos. You will probably start in Athens at 13.21 and arrive at Kalambaka at 17.35. There is also a direct train leaving Athens at 15.53 and arriving in Kalambaka at 20.10. Check timetables with www.ose.gr.
By Bus -- Seven buses run daily to Trikkala from the Athens terminal at 260 Liossion (tel. 210/831-1434). Allow at least 8 hours for the Athens-Kalambaka trip. Buses leave frequently from Trikkala (tel. 24310/73-130) for Kalambaka (tel. 24320/22-432). Several buses a day connect Kalambaka and the Meteora monasteries.
Referring to neckervd's input :
> Proastiakos direct services Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport > Athens Larisa have been discontinued recently ( temporarily, I dare to hope ), hence changing trains on the same ( and only ) platform at Neratziotissa station is unavoidable, but still the best way to get to Athens Larissa station ; trains Airport > Neratziotissa run every 20 mins., till 23.12 hrs., but connections from Neratziotissa only twice hourly.
> when I was at Meteora in June, there were only 2 buses daily to Meteora, one around 09.00 hrs., next one around 13.00 hrs.,
check timetables with the tourist information on the main square at Kalambaka ( bus is leaving from that place, in the middle of the road ( ! ), coming from direction train station.... - very confusingly not at the regular bus stop !
There was a local bus running between Kalambaka and Kastraki...maybe every 30 to 45 mins. However the bus only continues up to Meteora twice a day at times already stated. Only once on Sunday. I recommend taking the bus up to the top and walking back down visiting monasteries on the way. A 5 km walk.

Friends:
Your tips and comments have been very useful. Please tell me, if you can. We are planning to go from Athens to Meteora (Kalampaka) on December 25, 2008 (Christmas), then from Kalampaka to Delphi on December 27, and then back to Athens on December 28.
My question is if there are buses and/or trains any day of the year between all these places even on Christmas. 1 or more a day on Christmas, if any?
And how to get from Kalampaka to Delphi?
Thanks in advance.
