Hello,

yesterday I returned from a 7 days trip to Mani -the southern part of the third "leg" of Peloponnese. We stayed at a "hotel" near the Caves of Diros (very beautiful, by the way). I am not sure I can name the place here, so I won't, I am just furious with the people who own it, so I swore that as soon as I get back home, I'll come here and whine...

The problem was that we couldn't get a moment's peace, beacuse of the noise the owners of the "hotel" made. Their children were screaming, shouting, yelling and stomping their feet outside our room and all over the place, all day and all of the night and the grown-ups spent their time sprawling on their chairs (again very near our room), having invited their friends over for coffee, lunch, dinner whatever... (I am just going to mention the fact that because of their lazy ways, they only cleaned the room and changed towels and beddings every three days.)

Very unprofessional in my opinion. All visitors of the "hotel" were polite and quiet people and the owners couldn't keep their mouths shut and their childern under control! We stayed at the room as little as possible -and I never plan to go back there again!

Thank you for letting me vent,
apapsa (Athens, Greece)

So why did you stay? The Mani isn't exactly short of rooms for rent.

And they only changed the towels and cleaned the room every three days? How terrible. You're not American by any chance?

There were four of us: we called to every hotel within the area, the minute we got there -they were all but a couple of doubles (not in the same villages thought) booked. It was Dekapentaugoustos, the week when most of the Greeks take their leave.

I am Greek.

You're not from Many by any chance?

Greek origin, but have you lived ex Greece? this is normal Greek behaviour, especially during festivities, "dekanpendagousto" or 15th August being the most significant holy holiday of the year - perhaps if you seemed more approachable, they would have inviited you for a glass of wine -

Changing the towels and bedding every three days is the norm in my experience, but then I don't stay in upmarket hotels. I would expect the 'paper bin' to be emptied, and the beds to be made daily, though. Could it be that the owner's relatives descended upon them over the Aug 15th holiday, and they were just as annoyed with them as you?

Which hotel changes the bedding during a stay, certainly none I've stayed in and thats from 0 to 5 stars!? And most hotels these days prefer not to change guests towels on daily basis for environmental reasons.

Small family hotels tend to be a bit noisy, particularly on a holy day when friends and relatives visit. It's just part of the cultural scenery.

BTW what's the name of the hotel?

I'm baffled as to why the OP has even bothered to register just so he can rant about his experience at a hotel that he isn't even prepared to name.
Quote

We stayed at the room as little as possible

Who doesn't? Aren't hotel rooms places where you only go to sleep and shower? Personally, I never stay in hotels because even the quiet ones are too noisy for me.

Is it just me?

The OP does not explain if it was a hotel or just rooms to let. Lately many Greeks have become worst then some Italians from Rome or some French from Paris if you understand what I mean, when they ask for accommodation by phone or email they ask for special services even in the traditional "rooms" business, like air conditions and TV . I mean for God's Sake who will watch television during a holiday, OK I can understand the air condition after the outrageous hit wave we had -and looks like we will have this week-because they are Greeks and know very well what a hit wave means, in the contrary foreigners never ask about TV facilities and seldom about air condition . The old type of rooms (with common bath or toilettes) slowly disappearing from the islands and the new type are the studios or apartments, the equivalent of B&B or self catering apartments and the owner does not have the responsibility of changing the towels and linen daily ,as for the toilet paper the owner can have a bin somewhere in the premises and inform the guests that their waist can be deliver there by them. As about the noise as #3 posted 14 and 15 of August is one of the biggest celebrations in Greece and almost every Greek family has a Maria or Despina or Mary or Panagiotis or Panagiota that celebrating their name day something that for the Greeks is the equivalent of the birthday celebration, so you can understand that in the 15th of August almost every Greek will celebrate with friends and family. Wonder if the OP is a Greek.?
