Hello,
BF and me consider going to Lefkas in mid September, for a week. While I realise that this is a rather crowded island in July/August I wonder how bad it still is in September. I found a small appartement in walking distance to Tsoukalades. I realise this summer is rather cold and rainy so generally speaking, will it still be warm enough in September for swimming or laying at the pool or will it be too windy? If we book this trip we'll have a small car for the complete week. We plan to drive around, visit some villages and historical sites, maybe walk a bit, go to less crowded beaches with not too much waves for snorkelling (yea, limestone under water and brownish fish are interesting to see).
So what do you think?

This summer is cold and rainy? Well, definitely not in Greece... Anyhow, I was at Lefkada last week, and yeah, it was crowded alright, but even in August you can enjoy the most beautiful beaches without sharing them with thousands of other bathers, given that you are willing to arrive there either early in the morning, or, preferably, after 5pm, when the crowds start to get smaller. In September you shouldn't worry about crowds, because schools will have opened and family people will be back to work. One thing, though. Our Prime Minister proclaimed elections today, for the 16th of September, so if you come before that, be prepared for all the fuss elections in Greece come with...

Well, the summer is cold and rainy further to the NW in any case. I guess we had about 3 real summer days this year, and 2 weeks of almost tropical temperatures in April sigh We've been to Lesvos in early October once and the water was still warm enough for swimming but it was definitely to cold to relax on the beach with wet swimming clothes and considering Lefka's geographical location I would think it gets colder there a bit earlier.
Oh, the government fell or something similar? Well, our timing will be perfect: we plan on going on the 15th :) So what's so special about Greek elections? Are they as much fun as when Greece did well in basketball last year? We were on Karpathos then and the whole village went out on the streets and started to party. Lovely.

Lefkada is notorious for its cold waters- Porto Katsiki and Kathisma, beautiful beaches, but freezing cold waters in the heat of July.
This is the first I've heard of regarding the upcoming elections-
what does it mean basically, in terms of the tourist season-?
that the school opening will most likely be deterred until 2 days after, the 18th of September-
Greeks are compelled to vote within the municipality they are registered with, as a result there is mass movemenet all over Greece-
ferries, air tickets will be fully booked. There will be much traffic on the national highways -
for those touring the islands, accommodation will be usual mid season demand, -the only upheaval will be increased movement on ferry/air/road carriers.

Diana described exactly what's the case with Greece and elections. By the way, if I am not mistaken, Sunday the 16th is the day of the final, I mean... Eurobasket's final. If our guys do well enough, you may witness again the same scenes you saw at Karpathos :-). As for Lefkada's cold waters, it's true, the sea IS cold there, but I use to say that this is only a problem only those very few seconds when you enter the sea. If you ask me, my main "problem" with the sea on the west coast of Lefkada is that it gets too deep too soon, not really fun if you are a lousy swimmer like me :-). Eham... not to mention the waves that are typical of that coast...

Thanks a lot for all your information. Cold water brrr but then I don't spend hours swimming, and if there are waves then it's fun as well so... Anyway, I'm currently busy booking as we can only travel from Saturday-Saturday and alternatives include some locations I'm not so keen on, like Corfu or Rhodes.. well, not true, I'd like to see Rhodes but I would probably go even later in the year or in the spring for hiking trips and sightseeing only.
Anyway, I keep my fingers crossed for basketball. With the elections coming there should probably be enough people in the villages anyway for a good party :)
