I’ve been travelling with charter flights to Greece before .

And I was really satisfied with Crete, been there twice, so many options on what to do, but the best part was on the coast south of the Samaria-gorge, less tourists and more everyday life.
Maybe you should spend some more than a day on the route over the mountains.
(I’m from Norway, but the mountains on that specific road were much more breath-taking than our mountains in Norway)
By the way: Knossos is worth a visit.
I’ve also been at Kos. With a car you could see most of the island in one day.
Make sure to visit Zia and Paradise beach.
The thermal springs some 15 km east of the city is also worth visiting.
A one day trip to Bodrum, Turkey is also quite exiting.
