IMPIS (Institute for the Study and Monitoring of Santorini Volcano) has sent a letter to the members of the Hotel Association Santorini. They want to draw everyone's attention of the status of Red Beach in Akrotiri:

"We would like to inform you and ask you to inform clients of this situation, and that access to the beach is extremely dangerous due to landslides, to avoid any accident with incalculable consequences for the island"

They ask the members of the Hotel Association to contact the authorities and to take the nessesary steps to protect visitors from the enormous consequences that will occur in an accident due to a possible landslide.

The authorities has put up signs at the red beach but tourists does not respect these and still walk down but obviously it's not enough. They have to put up a fence very soon!

Well ... perhaps there is a Darwinian factor at play here - if tourists ignore the signs, then so be it: natural selection. Would a fence keep people out anyway?

It's the same on the island of Ruegen in Germany, they post signs not to excess this part of the beach but people still do, human nature and sometimes fatal.

I know it won't happen but I suggest they DO put up a fence...but add a gate or two, station uniformed people there, charge 50 euro per person to access and the ticket will have a non-liability statement on it...

If someone enters without a ticket then they're sol as they're trespassing...

The ticket/receipt for access to the chateau at Montsegur has something like that on it...extremely fit people have been known to run up the path...me, there were sections where the slippery rocks left me no choice but to almost crawl. It was worth it...
Someone asked why the village didn't offer donkey or mule rides to the top and the response was sort of...if people want to go there and risk their bodies, that's their business. We won't ask the animals to do it.

The donkeys are treated poorly enough as it is.
