Hi everyone,

I'm in the early stages of planning a vacation to Greece - my favorite place on Earth! I've set my sights on Karpathos, going in late August/early September, which I hope will be a perfect time with still-warm weather and the August crowds just clearing out.

What I am wondering about his how best to get around the island if I spend about a week there, with most days just devoted to beach time but a couple to hiking/exploring. My preference is always to do without a car. On other Greek islands of some size, like Naxos, I've taken the bus system. Other times I've rented a 4-wheeler / ATV, like on MIlos, and found that extremely easy to get around in. Do you think the same is possible for Karpathos - renting an ATV or taking buses to most locations is doable?

Bus lines and timetable 2008 (just in order to give you an idea):

There are furthermore almost daily excursion boats (OW tickets available) from Karpathos town to Ambelia Beach and to Diafani (with connecting bus to Olympos).
Early September is an excellent time indeed.
