Is it going to be safe to drive to greece overland rather than just take a ferry via italy to go there? What are the road conditions like on the E75 road that goes through serbia and macedonia that can take you to greece?

I have been using the easy way, Ancona Patras or Ancona Igoumenitsa, for more then 20 years now and my personal oppinion is just take the ferry.Driving in Greece and in the Balcans generally its not as easy as in western Europe.I don't know the condition of the E75 in Serbia and FYROM, but from Thessaloniki to Athens there are still quite a few of kilometers with only one lane and a hard shoulder in both directions without middle barriers. The same applies for more the 120 ks of the National highway E65 from Patras to Corinth.
hm. could you please say WHERE FROM you'll drive, as you can go via Slovenia,Croatia,Serbia and MAcedonia, but also through Hungary to the south..
but anyway, major corridors in Serbia are in excellent condition. if you come from Croatia, you are entering Serbia near Shid, from there you have ~110km of full motorway, almost straight going with no single considerable up/down or meandre, and excellently paved.
Belgrade can be a bit chaotic these days, as there are major constructions of motorway which will surpass the core of the city. I have no idea if you will be redirected to use this surpassing motorway in construction, or should you go through the city (which isn't hard at all, motorway cuts Belgrade into halfs). From Belgrade, you have 240km to Nish, part of motorway in very good shape, with only few spots along the way that require minor reparations (few km in total). From Nish to Leskovac/Grdelica gorge, there is full motorway in about 60km lenght, finished just few years ago, in perfect state. From Grdelica gorge towards the Serbian/Macedonian border, which is appr. 90km, it is just normal two lane regional road, but completely reconstructed in 2004, so it should be in great state. From the border towards Greece, via Macedonia, 90% of the road is motorway of full profile, although quality of the surface of the road isn't as good as in Serbia, but it is more or less pretty fine road.
driving this leg via Serbia and MAcedonia is extremely easy, along the road there are all neccessary facilities for drivers as modern gas stations of international and domestic companies, authorized repair shops, restaurants, etc. pretty easy, in my opinion.
this leg is only shadowed by unusualy higher road tolls in Serbia compared with neighboring countries (except Croatia and Greece).

In summer 2008 (May-August)I plan to drive from Rome and then ferry to Greece, make my way to Turkey and then overland back to Rome. Did the Croatia-Serbia parts in 2003 with no major problems except being fined by Serbian police for parking illegally in one lonely village in the middle of nowhere.
My problem is I am using the lease car for the whole period and the insurance coverage doesn't extend for Turkey, Macedonia, Albania, Serbia (the route I plan to drive back). I need separate insurance for these countries. Any advice?

This is pinoiako916, thanks mpetrovic for the information on the road condition on the E75 in serbia and macedonia. I am comming from paris and will be driving to athens next month. I never been to greece b4 but i know it will be fun.
When did u drive the E75 through serbia and macedonia?
I heard that driving the e75 through serbia and macedonia to go to greece is better than driving through hungary, romania and bulgaria. Are the main roads in better condition in serbia and macedonia than romania and bulgaria?
