Hi everyone!

I was hoping to get opinions on whether Malia is a good party spot/and what our time would entail.

Background: Four of us 26 year old girls are deciding how to split up our 5 days in Crete. My task is to decide whether it's worth doing a day/night in Malia. We wanted to go here originally because we heard it has great party beaches and nightlife. However, I read on a blog online that lots of the beach space is taken up by resorts so we wouldn't actually have access unless we stayed at a resort. Are our only options then to get a place with a pool and party at bars/clubs at night (we won't fork out a bunch of money to stay at a resort)?

We would be in Malia on Saturday July 1st, after staying a night in Hereklion. If you're curious, we are then off to the west end to see Samaria Gorge and take in Chania.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

Julia

The entire coastline is public property. Just because a resort borders the beach, doesn't mean they own the beach. You have the right to go there. If someone has set up beach chairs or beach beds, yes, you have to pay to sit on them. But you're not required to pay for a beach bed/chair in order to access the beach. You still have the right to be on that beach, for free.

I wouldn't say Malia has "great nightlife". It's a notorious drunk Brits town. If that's your thing, fine. Greeks resent these places, and no, they don't add much to the economy.

The beaches in Greece are public, you can throw down your towel anywhere for nothing.

There are concessions who rent out facilities like sunbeds/shades but they don't own the beach.
You are not obliged to rent those facilities either.

There are no Americanised 'resort hotels' owning beaches.

Malia is a rather downmarket 18-13 yo tourist resort for nightlife. 26 is quite a bit past the 'retirement age' of Malia....

By all means go and stay and have a look but you may not want to stay long.
