Hi, I found some packages from France (where I am at the moment) to Crete all inclusive, flight, taxes, food, accomodation for about 600Euros, AUD1000 (for July) but i'm not sure if it's a) a good deal or b) a good location. Any ideas? There's one that 17km from Heraklion and one that's at Rethymnon which is 80km west of Heraklion.

Considering july is high season it sounds a pretty good deal, but depending on how many stars the hotel is.
Is is for a week or 2 weeks?

Personally I would not choose an all inclusive hotel in Greece. Buffets are usually international. Much better to go around and try the local food in taverna's!! But all depends on your budget

Emelsy, depends on whom you want to spend your holidays with -- those all-inclusives, at least from the posts I see on the internet, are mainly frequented by U.K people looking for bargains, and may not have much Greekness about them. If you're going strictlly for the price, at least I would choose the Rethymnon place. It probably will be in a package-tour area near the beach. From there, however, it is easier/quicker to do a day trips to Chania, which is lovely and not a package-tour place.

Usually these offers are a good deal if you want to go somewhere just to chill out on a beach or go somewhere and be as active as you want to be.eg usually there are watersports, tennis, diving lessons etc availiable in these resort hotels, included or not at the price. Most of them have some nice bars/discos on site if you are interested to get drunk all night. Just check if their guests are mostly families or couples and what is their age rate. If you are going with your children, some resorts offer childcare with lots of activities to keep your children busy all day. If that's not the case, and I think it isn't, be carefull in case the resort is full of screaming children running around all day and bars close down by midnight. Do a research on what will really suits you.
Be sure you are not going to experience any local culture in such a resort. If you plan to chill out and enjoy the worm weather or just take advantage of the activitiesand services offered, that's alright. If you really want to come to Greece to have some interact with locals and get to know the place a bit, no,it's not a good option! It's up to what you are looking for, really!!!

All inclusive deals have their good and bad points. Usually they are pretty good value for money, but you don't say how long this one is for (one week?), so it is difficult to judge. My objection to packages is their inflexibility. If you like the resort, and end up in a good hotel, then fine. On the other hand, there are lots of horror stories from package tourists who have ended up in very noisy hotels, or next to a building site, and if that happens don't expect the tour rep to offer much help.

One of the delights of Greece is sitting at an outdoor table at a taverna having a meal. With an all inclusive package you will be paying for meals in your hotel, so will miss that experience. Recommend you look for a package without meals, or breakfast only.

Before deciding, check out the hotels offered by the package company for reviews in http://www.tripadvisor.com/. Choose carefully and you will have a good experience.
