I recently returned from a trip to Lesvos, spending three days in the gorgeous Mitilini town, the small fishing harbours and the picturesque mountain villages. Tourists were scarce, possibly due to recent political developments, leaving beaches and other sites looking rather empty. However, the trip was worthy it. The only negative experience was the car rental company, Lesvos Rentals (as stated in the website) or BEST as is their actual company name. Although a cheaper option, they were totally unprofessional. I’d go for a more reliable company next time.

My husband and I are planning a trip to Lesvos in September. We saw a news clip yesterday which showed many immigrants landing on the beaches in small inflatable boats and living in refugee camps on the island. We were wondering if you noticed this and if so did it affect your visit in any way?

It was too obvious not to notice, but I can't say it affected the safety of my trip in any way. I felt sorry seeing those people walking under hot sun, many with small children, trying to reach the city in order to be transported to Athens. It's the sad aspect of this ongoing humanitarian drama and it is particularly noticeable in the main roads leading to Mytilini town, the camp in the city’s outskirts, and the harbor. I noticed in the city harbor, where some sleep in tents, how some refugees would chat with tourists, telling their stories. I never felt intimidated or threatened, whatsoever.
