Hello Everyone!
I would never think of going on vacation to Greece in winter. It has always been associated in my mind with spending time on the beach and swimming in the warm sea.
My latest vacation took place in the end of December 2015 and my initial plan was to go skiing in the Alps.....
This trip to Athens has really changed the way I thought about this country. Athens has turned out to be a very nice place to go during the cold winter season.
- First of all the weather was really warm for this time of the year. During some of the days the temperatures reached 75 F degrees (Over 25C)! Athens was packed with people wearing sun glasses and sitting on numerous summer verandahs.
- Exploring Athens and its surrounding area was easy and inexpensive thanks to the convenient public transportation. We stayed at one of the best hotels facing Syntagma Square in the heart of the city. We used local subway and buses to get to several seaside towns near Athens. By the way Athens has an excellent subway system! For example Vouliagmeni had really good seafood restaurants. We also had some nice time at one of its upscale beaches called Astir. People were sunbathing during the day there! And it was the end of December!
- Walking around the city and exploring Acropolis is much more comfortable when its 70 F degrees in winter rather than over 100 F degrees in summer. Believe me!
I have posted my complete trip report here: http://followmckinsey.com/syntagma-square/

This changes year to year, week to week.

I'm a big fan of off-season travel. However, your one-off experience with the weather is not a solid basis for generalizations. It could just as easily have been rainy for a week, with temperatures below 10 celcius, people in thick coats etc.

I agree with you, bthdth..... But in general the climate in Athens is very mild and less humid if you compare it with Italy for example..... The perspective of getting some nice sunny days during your stay is usually quite solid... But last year it was definitely colder.
