Hi. Have been researching hotels in Athens and am getting hamstrung by an overload of alternatives. BASICALLY I want a "Hampton Inn"-type room with a roof top view of the Acropolis.

PLUS one that can be near the Metro FROM Piraeus and TO the airport. It SEEMS that Stygmata(sp?) and Monastiraki areas would fit the bill but the hotels seem a tad past their prime. The Acroplois View, Attalos Hotel and Cecil Hotel seem the best of these. Any comments negative or positive about these. Any others? I guess i'm looking to spend in the 75-100 euro range.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure what a Hampton Inn is, I've Googled it and it looks like one of those nondescript chain hotels.

The Attalos certainly ticks all your boxes - within a 2 minute walk of Monastiraki metro station, view of the Acropolis from the roof terrace and in budget.

It's not the Ritz, but it is perfectly acceptable and its biggest plus is that just about all the main sights are within easy walking distance.

Athens hotels are rather quirky, especially at the lower end of the price range, but you get what you pay for.

We have stayed at Attalos 5 times and have enjoyed it. It meets all of your criteria except for being the the Hampton Inn. For the most part you should not expect North American type hotels in Greece. In many ways Athens too is past its prime but that is why so many of us visit and keep coming back.
We consider the Attalos to be an inexpensive place to sleep with the advantage of being centrally located near all the important sights and transportation routes and as a bonus has a fantastic rooftop bar with a view of the Acropolis. The money we save by staying at Attalos allows us to spend it on ancient sites and dining.
For sure it is unimpressive and the rooms are not the greatest but it is clean, has location and economy and you should book soon because it is sold out much of the tourist season.

I have no experience with other hotels in Athens but the Attalos which was fine, mostly for the location.

You can book it cheaper through Hotelconnect. For november: HC -> 67,45 euro for a double with breakfast, while they charge 86 euro when you book directly.

Athens 3 and 4 hotels are a lower standard than in Western Europe. I stayed in the Best Western Esperia Palace in June it claimed to be a 4 (no way was that the case more like a 3).

Depending on your budget and intentions, I would advise the Plaka hotel() ( Mitropoleos street ) or Elektra Palace ( Navarchou Nikodimou street ), both in the plaka with roof top terrace.

Greece does not use the stars system as in other countries, but it's own 6 class system : L for deluxe, then going down from A (
/***) down to E (), so stars for Greek hotels differ from official star ratins in most West-European countries !

This being said : the comfort in most Greek hotels is decent, and especially in Athens where almost all, except some budget hotels/hostels, have been thoroughly refurbished and modernised for the 2004 Olympics. It should be admitted that this refurbishment was more than welcome in many hotels, but now Athens hotels definitely match the quality level you find in the other West- and South European capitals.

Hotels, as well as rooms and apartments to let, are subject to a rating system determined by the Greek National Tourist Organisation.
Class designation (old rating system): Lux, A, B, C, D, E
Star ratings (new rating system): 5**, 4, 3, 2, 1

In terms of technical specifications, it should be noted that class L (Deluxe) hotels correspond to 5
, A to 4, B to 3, C to 2, and D and E to 1. Until completion of the new rating system, some hotels will continue to feature the class-based designation, while others will display star ratings. (Source: gnto)

Also confirm attalos highly convenient. Keep your airport trolley and cross the road to the metro - don't have to leave your trolley until almost the last minute. agree no change on the metro line, then a very short walk. We stayed on the sixth floor - 610 I think - best room in the house - best view to the acropolis. However, no matter how hard I tried I was unable to confirm the room in advance. First come I guess. Again, basic, clean but certainly convenient.
