Due to a series of unforeseeable events. I have had no choice but to stay in Athens for an extra 14 days. A total of 35 days. Luckily I had over budgeted and had some extra money to spare on top of my other expenses. Having said that, I am now a little worried about my overall budget.

I have booked with the Attalos Hotel. They are offering me a rate of 40 euro/ night including breakfast because I am staying so long. This means that I am up for 1400 euro for the entire stay.

Does anyone know of another alternative to try? I am tempted by apartments but I am flying blind and if I don't like what I get then I am up the creek.

Hotel (Pension) Adonis offered 35 euro/night for an extended stay but I opted for the Attalos because I want to feel free to come and go as I please. I enjoy the Athens night life and don't know if Hotel Adonis would allow that freedom. I like the location of both the Attalos and Hotel Adonis as I am familiar with Syntagma and know I can find my way around and feel safe at the same time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why wouldn't you be able to come and go as you please from the Adonis? Even so, the extra 5 Euros per night you will save will only total 70 Euros for the entire two weeks. You'll have to decide how important that mony is to you.

35 or 40 Euros a night sounds like a pretty good price in the center of Athens. Only way you would be able to do better is to go to a hostel. You might do some googling on apartment rentals, and see what kind of prices you can find.

I've only stayed at the Attalos once (and I know some people who've stayed there). For location you can't beat it and, at that price it's good value. Just ensure your room is as far away from the lifts as possible, right at the end of the corridor and preferably with a half decent room and I don't think you can go far wrong.

I meant "half decent view" - sorry...

You won't find any rental apartments in the old quarter - or generally in central Athens.
They are few and further out in the suburbs.

Try this website: Eurocheapo.

I would buy a tent and find a campsite personally. Depends on if you're up for roughing it or not.

Another option would be to try couchsurfing.com and hop around maybe.

Good luck.

John's Place Hotel at #5 Patroou Street, off Mitropoleos Street just a couple of blocks down from Syntagma is the least-expensive budget hotel I know of in Athens. You might try contacting them to see what sort of long-term rate they might offer you. Their normal nightly rate when I stayed there was 35 euro for a single with shared bath. There's no website, but the number is 30-210-322-9719.

We stayed at the Attalos on short term basis before travelling out to the islands. Found it most convenient and the rooftop bar is brilliant.
