Hi all, What is the best way to go from Zugspitz to Fussen? I've checked ViaMichelin.com and the route they advise me to use is one that goes through Austria. Few questions.

  1. Is there a better route in terms of traveling time?
  2. Will there be any problem if i use this route in a rental car, heard about the fact that rental companies often do not allow travel into Eastern Europe.
  3. Do i need any special pass to travel into Austria? Need to pass immigration?
  4. Roughly how long will this journey take?
  5. Is half a day a reasonable time to spend to visit Zugspitz including the time traveling up and down the mountain. My intention is to take in the views and nothing much else. Should i do more than that?
  6. How long does it take to travel up and down the mountain.

Apologies for the many questions in one post.
Thanks so much for your answers!

I'll repost my reply from another forum:

  1. It's hard to tell, not knowing the route suggested, but there is really only one good short way to go and it is a short distance through Austria.

  2. Austria is not Eastern Europe, you will have no problem with the rental car, but they probably should be advised of the countries you will be traveling in.

  3. Both Austria and Germany are Schengen countries with no boarder controls between them. Entry into one of the Schengen countries should give you entry into the others with the same visa, if required.

4.Probably much less than an hour.

  1. I've never visited the Zugspitze but have only driven past it. There are basically two ways up, a train from the German side, and an aerial tramway from the Austrian side. If you go up from the Austrian side you are already much closer to Fuessen.
