I'm looking for recommendations for a place to overnight somewhere between Amsterdam and Berlin in early May. I've been looking into Celle but am still shopping for options (or confirmations that Celle is great!). Ideally, we'd like somewhere on the quiet side after the craziness of Queen's Day in Amsterdam. My partner and I are interested in art and architecture, and will be happy to have a leisurely day walking/cycling around town taking in some local history. Any suggestions are welcome, as well as any transportation options. Thanks!

Queen's day will be a bit different this year in Amsterdam because of the inauguration of Willem Alexander, he will become King that day and that inauguration will happen in Amsterdam

Assuming you are travelling by car, Celle is pleasant enough for an overnight but a bit off route if going by train. Alternatives would be Osnabruck, Hameln or if you want somewhere bigger, it is worth spending some time in Magdeburg.

ditto #2, Celle perfect for a stroll and a bikeride
Still smaller, Bad Bentheim, castle and cycling mekka.

On the Amsterdam-Berlin route, Amersfoort, Deventer and Osnabrück would be a few worthwile options.

Some keywords for Osnabrück:
Felix Nussbaum-Haus/Daniel Libeskind
Erich Maria Remarque
And much more, a.o. Peace Treaty Town on http://www.germany.travel/en/towns-cities-culture/towns-cities/osnabrueck.html

Hah. I just logging on to ask something very similar. I'll be travelling from amsterdam to berlin in July and need somewhere to break it up abit. I think im going to pluck for Osnabruck.

Ok, this is only making it harder! Need... more... time! I think I'm still leaning towards Celle, though now I feel like I have some more options to discuss with the BF. Thanks!

What about Berlin? A good alternative to Amsterdam; we stayed in this place http://www.berlinbedbreakfasts.com/vendors/hotelbogota.aspx - funky in a way bug good value for money - the Swing evening was hilarious :-) and they have got their own photo exhibitions in house, which I loved myself.
