I will be working in Munich for a month this August. Although I am anticipating a great time in the city, I am using my weekends to check out other parts of Germany. One area I would love to check out with my girlfriend is Mosel Valley. I went to St. Goar years ago, so I am more interested in Mosel and the Burg Eltz castle.
My current plan is to rent a car, drive out Friday afternoon, and spend the night in Rothenburg. Then, the following morning, head out to Mosel, likely spending the night in Cochem. Sunday, drive back to Munich.
Is this driving itinerary possible? Looking on a map, it seems feasible. Also, how long of a drive is the return trip from Mosel to Munich?

The itinerary seems workable. Be sure to book a room in Rothenburg, it's very popular, though still worth a visit. Cochem to Munich should be about 5-6 hours drive, depending on your speed.

... depending on your speed and on the number of other cars on the highway. Traffic jams are frequent and can easily add an hour or two.

Well as you will not make it to Rotheburg before late evening (3 hours) you should give yourself at least half a day in Rothenburg. Especially when your friend joins you. There is fabulous Christmas tree decoration shopping opportunities ;o)

Thank you for your responses. I have booked rooms in both Rothenburg and Cochem. Finding a room in/near Mosel was tough!! Almost everything was booked solid!
We'll probably leave from Munich Friday after lunch, hoping to get to Rothenburg by the late afternoon/early evening. Hopefully we won't get lost!

Okay I have a follow-up question for those familiar with this area. Is it possible to travel from Munich to Rothenburg by train? I'm wondering if it would be less of a headache to rail it to Rothenburg, then to Frankfurt, then rent a car from Frankfurt and drive it to Mosel Valley. Thanks in advance.
DB timetable

If you stick to regional trains (select at the DB timetable as means of transport "only local transport") than you can use the Bavaria Ticket from Munich to Rothenburg. EUR 27,00 for 2-5 persons. Similar but only valid either Sa or Su is the Happy-Weekend-Ticket (EUR 33,00) which covers all regional trains in Germany.
