I will be in Hamburg next summer and will go to Berlin by train. I think there are tons of trains going all day so if I just show up at the central station and buy a ticket. How much will it cost? Would it be better to purchase it a few days in advance or even a few weeks.

There are plenty of trains.

Usually, the later you buy it,the more it will cost.

So..if you know exactly where and when you are going, buy it in advance... even a couple of months before.

BTW i think the earliest you can buy is 90 days in advance.

They will start selling the cheapest tickets on that day,and when they are all gone, the price will move up to the next 'level'...and so on.....

Walk up direct ICE fare = 76 euros
Walk up fare using local public transport only = 42 euros, but it takes an additional 2:40.
Advance cheapest fare using the direct ICE = 29 euros.

There's a train roughly every hour or so.

Book at http://www.bahn.co.uk.

It's correct that the earliest you can buy an ICE ticket is three months before your travel date. These cheap tickets have special conditions, though, for example you are bound to exactly that train, it is more expansive if you want to change your booking etc... So if you decide to book early, be sure you know about the conditions!

As already said - the earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. But even a few days before your date you might still be able to get a very cheap ticket if you choose a time that is not peak time and go early in the morning or late in the evening, and you might still get a ticket for maybe 35 to 40€ instead of 76€. Just go online on bahn.de and compare all the prices, or ask in a travel centre in the train station.

I also recommend reserving a seat which costs 4€. Many people don't, but I personally think that these 4€ are a good investment because they save a lot of hassle. Sometimes ICEs can get quite full, especially on weekends or if there is a special event (such as a football game), and then it is very nice if you can just walk to your seat and sit down instead of walking endlessly through all the carriages in search for a seat.

Thanks for the info. reserving a seat for the extra 4 euros sounds good to me.
