My wife and I will be moving to Weimar, Thuringen, Germany in July, for a new job. We would like to get information from anyone who might know the area, especially people who have lived there. I have family who moved to the Weimar area two years ago., they have moved again in the meantime.
Thüringen is beautiful! Weimar was too tourist orientated for our taste, near-by Erfurt is actually the nicer town in our mind.
Rents were a lot less than here ( South-Western Germany near Frankfurt.) Even groceries were less.
We had some trouble understanding the local dialect, it got better after some time, but when people talked fast we still had problems.
We found the tourist information both in Erfurt and in Weimar very helpful.

Transportation:
Weimar is part of the Verkehrsverbund Mittelthüringen (VMT).
Nearby Erfurt airport is small, but offers a number of budget flight options.
