I have a few days to kill in Berlin and having lived in the West long ago before the Wende I am curious to see new attractions. The other threads in Thorntree have been very helpful. I'm staying in Prenzlauer Berg and think I've figured out most of the Stasi, Mauer, DDR attractions in and around Mitte. Question: are there outlying areas with interesting sites, galleries, bookstores, shops, cafes to spend part of an afternoon in? Pankow was recommended to me, also I was going to check out Lichtenberg (Treptower Park nearby?) but I was hoping to get a few opinions from travelers or natives on less-visited districts in the East (i.e. not Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg) that are worthwhile to check out.

Also, any tips on bike rentals - easy to find or is the weather this time of year not conducive?

Thanks.

Try Köpenick. It's a "small town in the big city" and Köpenick was an own town before it became part of Berlin in 1920. Köpenick lies in the southeast of Berlin and can be accessed by S-Bahn. From the S-Bahn station Köpenick there is some walk or tram ride to the old town. A picture gallery with historical and actual photos can be found here.
