Hello. My partner and I will be in Munich for a Sunday evening at the end of January 2014. We won't get to our hotel until after 9pm. Do restaurants/bars stay open late on Sunday evenings - considering it's winter? We are considering staying at an airport hotel as we are driving to the Alps the next day, but thought if things were open on Sunday evenings, we'd prefer to stay in the city.

We'll also be back in Munich the following weekend, for the whole weekend. We're in our 30's, like art, music, markets, good food - any suggestions welcome on what we should see.

Thank you in advance :-)

I just got back from Munich and noticed, even during Oktoberfest, that the city center was fairly dead on Sunday. No department stores were open, hardly anyone around, and few restaurants were open. We stayed just outside of city center near the train station and while there were bars and casinos open, there just wasn't a lot of options beyond that. With that having been said, the beer gardens may have a different schedule. The scene may be different if you stay in a different area of the city.

So, keep that in mind when planning your Sunday evening stay and then for your following weekend when you return. Note that landmarks are generally open, albeit with limited Winter hours.

I'd use an airport hotel given you're heading to the alps the next day but will be back in Munich later. However, have you thought about taking the train to the alps? Booked this far in advance it could well be cheaper than hiring a car fuel (if you're hitting Switzerland) a sticker for the Swiss motorways.
