Hi everyone,

I received some exciting news today in that I was accepted to do summer research in Karlsruhe, Germany. :) I'm really excited and will probably accept, so I was wondering what people could tell me about the city/area because I don't know very much except for a few Internet searches. It seems like a great place for weekend trips from what I gather at the very least, so that's a great start...

Any and all comments much appreciated.

Are you in luck!!! Well-known poster BlandineForberg aka KathrinE lives there, so information is certain to come your way.

There's the palace there, and its next to the Black Forest (www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info). It is in the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg (www.tourismus-bw.de and www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de for the palaces, castles, monasteries and gardens that the state operates). France, and Strasbourg, are a short distance away across the Rhine, and Switzerland is also fairly close. You can travel around Baden-Wuerttemberg inexpensively for a day using the BW train ticket, 18-19 euros single and 27 euros for 2-5 people. There are some restrictions such as only regional trains and no travel before 9AM on weekdays. On weekends, you can inexpensively travel all over Germany with the Happy Weekend ticket, with similar restrictions.

Cheers adeben! Here I am ;-))

Andromeda, feel free to ask anything you want! I'll do my very best to answer... But please be a bit more specific...
Will you do your research at university, or where? (just curious!)

Karlsruhe is IMHO a great place to live!
marcopolko has already listed a couple of options for weekend travel. Train connections are excellent, and so is the public transport network in the city and its surroundings.

A good source of information is the page of our tourist office, two even better ones, if you read German, are www.karlsruhe.de</a> and our town's wiki

I'd appreciate the OP to come back and show some interest before I write a longish piece about Karlsruhe...

Ah sorry, was away on spring break...

And thanks for the info, but I got word that I got accepted into another program I wasn't thinking I'd get into to work with a famous astronomer, so after a bit of hair-pulling I turned down Germany. :-( On the bright side, I'll be going to San Francisco for the summer instead, so I'm sure that will be cool too.

Thanks again tho.
