There are lots of ways to get to Amsterdam.

eg. by train: do you want to take the fast train, or the scenic route and see the Rhine valley?

would you be prepared to share a car with someone ("Mitfahrzentrale")

How are you getting to Frankfurt in the first place?

I don't know of any cheap hotels in Frankfurt itself, but there are plenty of reasonably priced ones reachable outside of the city (eg. this one)

If you book ahead online and manage to get a special (committing to a particular train) then Holland/Amsterdam Spezial tickets start at 29 Euro one way.

Otherwise eurolines buses should be a lot slower and uncomfortable but should get you there too. But if you have to go by road anyway, sharing a ride (Mitfahrzentrale) would probably be quicker and cheaper but it really depends on the ride you share.

Best would be an Europe-Special ticket from Frankfurt to Amsterdam for EUR 39,00. The ICE highspeed trains are fast and really comfortable.

Frankfurt has only 2 hostels:
Frankfurt Hostel
House of the Youth

With hotels the situation depends on your travel date. On weekdays you can get really good deals with business deals. During big trade fairs (e.g. the book fair or the IAA) you're lost.

"On weekdays you can get really good deals with business deals."
Complete nonsense. Should read:
On weekends you can get really good deals with business hotels.

Lufthansa has return flight deals for around €80 if you book in advance.
