How to stay in Germany as an Australian?

Hello...

my boyfriend is Australian and we would like to live together in Berlin.
He has looked into the regulations and it says that we either have to get married or he has to find a top-end job and none of that seems realistic at the moment. It also says he is just allowed to stay for 3 months and then has to leave.

Now I have seen sooo many people living in Berlin who seem to be able to stay and I wanted to ask if anyone can give us some advice for this? Anything helpful would be much appreciated.

Either he finds a company that sponsors his stay and gets him a work permit or you have to be legally married, although even then you will have to go through quite some paper work.

Only citizens from Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States may enter Germany for long-term stay purposes without a national visa. These foreign nationals may directly apply for the necessary residence or settlement permit at the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) in Germany.

What nationality are his parents and/or his grandparents? Can he get a EU passport through them?

Wot Fwoggie said - has your boyfriend checked yet whether he could get the citizenship of another EU country through his parents or grandparents?

Or whether Germany offers a working holiday visa programme for Australians? (Australia does for Germans, and these visa types are usually offered reciprocally).

Or could he save up enough money to live on for a year or more and get a student visa to enrol in intensive German classes?

Or quickly get a qualification which would be sought after in Germany and get him a job and a work visa?

As a desparate alternative, he could get a TEFL qualification and get a work visa as a freelance English teacher, but the tough bit is actually getting work.

Do a search through the Forum of the Toytown Germany website to read about people's experiences trying to get work as teachers, or any kind of work, specially in Berlin, which is not exactly the economically strongest city in Germany.

Do not forget to look into mandatory health insurance (and the need for personal liability insurance - Haftpflichtversicherung).

How old is your boyfriend? I don't know the exact age limit right but Australians can apply for a working holiday visa for Germany.
