Hi therer

My husband and I are about to travel in Germany I am trying to find the answers to….

  1. What is a nice town to overnight in halfway between Berchtesgaden and Fussen (travelling along the alpenstrasse)?

  2. We are going to go down the Rhine from Koblenz to Maine over 5 nights. We are thinking of overnighting at :

i) St Goar, Bacharach, Rudesheim. Question is – are these towne near the place where the ferry stops ie on the water?

ii) What other 1 or 2 towns should be overnight at along the way?

Any feedback would be healpful.

Thanks!

These towns (villages) are directly at the places where the ferry stops - they are the reason the ferry stops there!

Bacharach is very picturesque but it is very small and gets quite crowded during the day with trippers. At night however it becomes a bit of a 'ghost town' and is extremely quiet.

Boppard is the first biggish place south of Koblenz and is worth a stop for the night. Oberwesel looks promising too though I've never overnighted there.

  1. Any of them.

2 Love the Rhineland but it is not that long, and packing and moving every night, what a bummer. Consider a couple of nights in one or the other and take day trips.

Gute reise

1...also Prien a Chiemsee where you can visit Herrenchiemsee and Fraueninsel...(although perhaps not exactly on the Alpenstrasse)...

2...(i)...as #2 says they are exactly on the waterfront where the ferries stop...

...(ii)...stayed in Bacharach, Oberwesel and Braubach...Oberwesel is also very pleasant and dead quiet at night as are most of these towns/hamlets...to be honest if I was doing it again I would use one of them as a base and travel each day from there as the distances are not great and ferries are very frequent...

...also consider a night or two on the Mosel if you have 5 days as it is also lovely and very different from the Rhine...say 3 Rhine and 2 Mosel perhaps...
