I speak German, but live in Australia and find it really hard to keep up my language skills. I'm keen to find some good online content - not language-learning tools, but just standard content like TV shows that are available online, radio programs, podcasts, interesting websites etc. I'm out of touch with the German media and would love some recommendations.

In Australia I'm a big fan of the ABC - I guess kind of equivalent to BBC (UK) or NPR (US) if that helps define my tastes. But even fun stuff like Kommissar Rex would be great if it's online...

I'm posting this in the 'Speaking in Tongues' branch too.

The Spiegel has a great website for news and it provides news summaries on video, just click and watch a two minute or so news bulletin. http://www.spiegel.de/

RTL now has a number of their TV shows available on their website for free: http://rtl-now.rtl.de/
It's mostly reality-type stuff - German Supernanny, Who wants to be a millionaire, decorating shows, problem teens, and the like.

I should add that you can see whole series, you don't need to register or anything, all you need is a decent internet connection and you click and watch - it's really a good option.

How about DW-TV, Deutsche Welle's worldwide TV service? It's in alternating German and English, with a half hour of news followed by a half hour of infotainment: magazine shows, feature documentaries etc. Online at dw-world.de

Thanks everyone! These sound like great suggestions. I'm impressed that there's so much free content from the TV stations these days. I don't watch much reality TV in Australia, but if it's in German I can just about convince myself that it's educational...

As a trade, if you want good quality English-language content, the ABC website has a great range. They are split into TV content from their 2 TV stations, and radio content from their many radio stations. My personal favourites include:

Enough Rope (TV - great interviews)
The Chaser (TV - satire - lots of Australia-specific content)
Street stories (radio documentaries about everyday life)
The Science Show (radio - what it says)
By Design (radio - architecture and design)
Radio National (streaming live radio - home of the radio shows above)

Hey!

Another suggestion for any type of information ist www.zdf.de ... at the very top is a link to "mediathek" where you get tv-shows for free. Most of it is about features, dokumentaries and news stuff, but some are about science etc. There are even some Telenovelas and films (mostly with a history aspect)

Cheers
Phin
