Can anyone suggest some good Franconian Breweries (that are open in winter, some are not). There are so many and I can't decide which to visit.

Bamberg's Rauchbier (smoked beer) is definitely special and unique. You'll either love it or hate it - myself, I'm with the lovers. Try.

The best Weizen I've ever tasted was Hönika from Wunsiedel.

I've had the Rauchbier (and have been to Bamberg), and believe it or not, I'm kind of in the middle. I like it, but i wouldn't want more than 1 at a time.

What I'm really having touble with is this: The beers from belgium, the uk, bohemia are popular and deserve to be. However, with so many breweries in one small area(like Franconia) why is there not more fanfare? Are they just not good quality for the most part? I can find a million sights devoted to uk beers or belgian beers, but only a couple about franconia and I'm not sure why. Which is maybe the reason I have the urge to go and find out for myself! I just don't want a big disappointment.

Thanks for the hint about the Wunsiedel beer, I'll try to find that!

not to be mean - just cause people bragg about their mediocre beer in tons of websites doesn't mean anything - and is it really possible to get dissapointed by any beer after drinking industrialized French (Kronenbourg - yuck) and US beer (not counting microbrews) ? most breweries in Franconia have excellent stuff - Bamberg is a great beer city - as you have 7 (?) breweries within walking distance

the beer is natural an brewed since centuries only with nature.
but try the region around bamberg especially now as they have a second taste you only get here
that is carp fried- gebackener Karpfen -you get served what looks like a whole fish really it is half of it and it was fried ,its served with potato salad

Bamberg itself has 10 breweries and several other rexcellent pubs so you can spend 2 or 3 days just there. Transport is not great to the small villages, could be better to get on a train and go to forchheim(check out the Kellerwald) which has 4 breweries, Hirschaid(Kraus) Buttenheim(Lowenbrau and St georgen) Eggolsheim etc. The region is utterly wonderful, you cant go wrong if you love beer. As for there not being much about these beers overseas, most of them are very small, intensely traditional, conservative businesses, who arent interested in marketing or adjusting their tastes to a mass market, which is what makes the area unique in the world of beer.

Those little breweries sell all the stuff they produce in their region, so there is no need for big advertising campaigns outside Franconia. Germans don't believe in big business as much as Northern Americans seem to do. Many are happy with small, regional, traditional, specialized businesses.

Rule of thumb: Anyone who does a lot of advertising is in need of a lot of advertising. Really good products don't need much noise.

Little breweries, often pub-breweries, are everywhere in Franken, you can hardly go wrong. We discovered, for example, one in Pottenstein (a very picturesque village in the beautiful hills named Fränkische Schweiz, by the way) that made an excellent amber-coloured "Kellertrunk". I don't remember the name but everyone in the village knows it.
