Hey

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about where would be a nice wee daytrip from Berlin ? Looking for somewhere about 2 hours away and accessible by train, with enough to keep two adults occupied for the day. Suggest absolutely anything and everything you can think of!

Perfect choice: Potsdam. See the various palaces, the gardens, the city itself, and /or site of the Potsdam Conference, at which the "Big Three" decided the boundaries of Europe for the next 45 years.

Oh yeah, second that on Potsdam. Sanssouci, the "Dutch quarter" etc etc. Great little spot.

Potsdam of course is great and you can spend more than a day there,
a boat tour is nice as you can see some of the castles from a different
perspective. Another option by train from Berlin is the
Spree Forest, you could take a regional train to Luebben
or Luebbenau and go around by a canoe or tub.
It is recommended if you wanna spend a quiet
relaxing day in the nature.

As the others said, Potsdam and Spreewald are your best bets.

Nature:
Did the Spreewald tour last time I've been in Berlin. It's easy to get there by regional train , ask for the special Brandenburg-day-tickets, they are cheaper than the regular ones. From both places (Luebben and Luebbenau) are barge tours on offer, some four to five hours, some one to two hours. Did the shorter one (I think 8 euros per person), was nice and long enough and very relaxing. It's a lovely and unique area.

Culture:
Potsdam is amazing but also exhausting with this amount of sights, especially when the place is buzzing with tourists. But the palaces and the old city are real worth visiting. For visiting Sanssouci palace see to it that you get your entrance ticket well in advance (first thing after arriving in the park). Visitors are limited. Take the S-Bahn S1 to Potsdam.

History:
At the other end of the S1 in the north is Oranienburg with the former concentration camp Sachsenhausen. It's a more somber sightseeing tour obviously, but very impressing.

Potsdam and Oranienburg are in public transport zone "Berlin C". Thus you just need a ticket for "Berlin ABC".
e.g. day ticket for Berlin AB (= city of Berlin) is EUR 5,80. Day ticket for Berlin ABC (Berlin, Potsdam, Oranienburg, ...) is EUR 6,00.

You can visit Potsdam, Spreewald or if you love country side then go to Licthenburg station and take NEB to kosztyn ... and if you find any site interested just get off yourself.

Thanks guys for all the replies - everything suggested sounds great!
Another question: is it best to get a tour of Sachsenhausen sorted in Berlin by a tour company, or are there tours organised at the location? I'm wondering because when we visited Aushwitz, by making our own way there and going with a guide who worked on site, we saved money and I think also got a better tour.
If people don't see this here I may add it as another thread - so you may see it twice.
