I'm heading to Berlin for a couple of days in August.
I've been there as a tourist so many times so I'm looking for some hints to live it as a "berliner".
In particular I'd like to have some suggestions about:

  • nice street markets (of food, antiques, clothing, whatever)
  • particular shops (food, design whatever)
  • nice bars/places where to hangout at night (which are the cool places at the moment where to have a good drink and listen to good music?)
  • any special event on 14th and 15th August? (concerts, fireworks etc..)

Any other thing or curiosity you think I don't have to miss!

Thanks a lot! :-)

Prenzlauer Berg: market at Kollwitzplatz (Thursday and Saturday) and start with breakfast at nearby Meierei, Zeiss-Großplanetarium (one of the largest planetarium in the world)

Schöneberg: Winterfeldmarkt ((Wednesday and Saturday) and visit the stand of Cupcakeladen - http://www.berlin-getaway.com/cupcakeladen/, if you like absurd and curious things, then do not miss the Museum of Outrageous Things (Museum der Unerhörten Dinge)

Mitte: if you are one of the persons who go really bread crazy, then visit Zeit für Brot - http://www.berlin-getaway.com/zeit-fur-brot-bakery-cafe-mitte/, if in mood for a cocktail: Drayton bar and then you can dance till the morning

Kreuzberg: Maybachufer market (Tuesdays and Fridays) - the best Turkish market in Berlin, on your way there, stop by the Berlin Burger International

  • Mauerpark (flea market + Karaoke) - a "must do" whether you're a tourist or a local.
  • If the weather is still good until there, go to Krumme Lanke, Wannsee or Weissensee. The lake is the Berliner beach.
  • Eating/drinking - it depends pretty much on where you're staying. I'd suggest you go to Simon-Dach-Str. many interesting bars: Primitiv, Kptn, Astro-Bar and the complex Cassiopeia - RAW. From there it's also a short trip to Kreuzberg and the bars around Oranienstr.
  • Live music - so many venues... tell us what kind of music you like best.
  • It's a good idea to have a look at the Tip or the Zitty magazines, you'll find a very complete overview of eeeeeeverything that's going on in town. Also the Berliner Morgenpost gives you an online search function that is very helpful.
  • Also to live like a local rent an apartment , preferably in your top district. If you're in for the hype, my suggestion is Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Neukölln. West Berlin is kinda dull.

That's it. Shout if you need more info ;-)
