Hi there,
We are heading to the Loire for a few days in September and want to visit a couple of vineyards/ cellars and do some wine tasting.
We are hiring a car, but don't want to drink and drive, obv!
Is it possible to take an organised tour (via coach/ minibus) to any of the vineyards or cellars, which we can book through the hotel, tourist information or the winery itself? Or can we get to any of them using public transport?
We are thinking of staying in Saumur, but haven't booked anything yet, so as yet plans are flexible.
Thanks for your help,
Mischa

It is definitely possible to take an organized coach tour in the Loire. I did it a few years ago, and it's pretty easy to set up through your hotel or on the internet. I know they do the chateaux, but not sure about wineries. I would try doing a google search...I'm sure you could find something pretty easily.

sadly this website has worn me out, I have tried 4 times to post an useful letter along with a link to the wineries of Saumur (which are really superb!) so I will do the basics:
http://www.ot-saumur.fr/

click the UK flag in the bottom left of the page
click visits and curiosites
click vinyards and tasting
click on "large cellars...."
you will find that a lot of really good caves are within 5 mins of the town centre, I personally recommend Ackerman and Bouvet- Ladubay who produce world class sparkling and white wines but suffer from being in an unfashionable region.
The Chateau on the hill in Saumur is also worth a visit if you have a chance as well.

Both Saumur and Chinon are very nice small towns to base your self. There are tours organised. But it shall be easier with your own car. Since this is wine tasting, you shall not drink heavily, and thus should be okay (best to do it in the afternoon then). Don't forget many wineries are closed on week-ends (some are open on saturday morning).
I find the north-western part of Touraine to hosts the best wines: Bourgeuil for the Red, and Coteaux du Layon for White.
Happy tasting!

For our tuppence, Chinon is great - has a little (quite cheesy) wine museum, and the local wines are very, very acceptable. You could cycle between the 2 towns, taking in the Fontevraud Abbey as well, but if you like your bubbly stuff, Saumur has the goods.
Personal favourite is an absolutely cracking €3ish rose by Corinne and Francois Medard near Chinon, postcode 37500 - and a 14th century chapel 200m from the vineyard makes a nice sidetrip. A moreish 2001 cuvee is definitely worth the money as well.
