Hi, I am a scientific researcher visa holder in France. I am currently working in the United states. My récépissé will expire on the 21st of April 2017; however, I just knew that my 10-year residency card in France was accepted and I can pick it up from the prefecture once I go back. My only concern is that I have booked my ticket back to France on the 20th of April one day before my visa expires. Will I be able to access the country without any problems? or should I go there earlier? Another question: will I be able to pick up the residency card from the prefecture after the expiration of my visa ( I am planning to go to the prefecture on Monday the 24th). I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

I live in France and deal with préfectures and visa/residence issues all the time, it seems. CALL them, and call the Consulate. If you talk to 5 people you'll get 5 different answers, so be prepared for that. It doesn't sound to me as if you'd have any problem arriving in France the day before your visa expires, but much, if not all, will depend on the actual human beings you encounter. Could be fine, could be a nightmare. CALL them, asap.

I agree with Stcirq's reply. I think your question is beyond the scope of our knowledge, and that you should contact the nearest French consulate for advice and a possible interview!

I am currently working in the United states

How many consecutive days have you been in the states (or rather, outside of Schengen)?
More than 90?

Thank you for your reply. by April 20th I'll be 92 days out of Schengen why? does it matter? My VISA still holds and I am fiscally a resident of France and paying my taxes there...

If you have been 90 days out of Schengen and if you have the US nationality, you can re-enter visa free under the visa waiver program for 90 days.

I don't have the American nationality, I am Lebanese.... but I do have a valid visa till the 21st and another 10 year residency card (in France) which is not yet physically with me but I can pick up once I am in France. I am just worried they will be suspicious and won't let me go in to get it.

In that case, I would think the earlier you go--the more days your visa will remain valid--the less trouble you're likely to have re-entering France.

Either way, when you do go back to France, it would be a good idea to have easy access to any and all ID and documentation that proves you are (or have been) a long-term resident of France: a national identity card or health care card, driver's license, a tax number (?) etc. And especially copies (or originals) of any correspondence stating that your residence permit is waiting for you on arrival.

This would be in addition to--rather than instead of--stcirq's solid advice above.

As noted, show up with your VISA, your preuve de fiscalité, your passport, your preuve d'avoir payé les taxes foncières et taxes d'habitation, and un justificatif de résidence. Et la lettre que vous avez reçu disant que votre permis de résidence vous attend.
