Hi!

I've booked a last minute, un-thought-out trip to Marseilles for a few weeks time. I fly in Sat evening, out Tuesday evening. I've been to Marseilles before, and can't wait to get back and have a look around again. However, I think i'd like to spend my Sun/Mon nights elsewhere. Car hire is pretty cheap, so I'll pick up a car on Sunday from Marseilles Airport for 2 nights' touring.

The question is, where to go....a few options include Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, La Camargue, Nimes, Pont du Gard, Aigues-Mortes and Arles. So obviously I can't go everywhere, but can someone reccommend their favourite?

Thanks!

All options are okay. But the key issue is: what's your main interest that will help us to recommend a good match.
A pretty big lively town as Nîmes or a compact historical district as you'll find in Aigues-Mortes.
But you ask for my favorite?
Can't choose. But you can never go wrong.
If you like a hike in your 'programme' just include the Camargue, e.g. go east fro Saintes-Maries de la Mer.
For Aigues-Mortes you'll need 2-3 hours. Arles will require a day. So does Nîmes: at least.

But as I indicated: difficult to choose, you can't go wrong anywhere.

Marignan, the airport, is situated north-west from Marseille and by car you reach easy the Camargue or if using the motorways Aix and Avignon. Arles can be a good place for two nights as it is from here in each direction 40/45km : 30 min to drive to all places on your list.

as above, you cant go wrong.
arles is my favourite. its not to big, its not to small, it has great roman ruins, a good atmosphere, a good choice of restaurants. also, a great location. if you feel like spending a couple of hours on the sea, its not far. if you want to visit pond du gard (which is very much worthwile visiting in my opinion), its not far either. if you want to visit a monastery ( saint michel de frigolet is a beautiful place), its not far either.

Thanks everyone for your comments! In the end, i've decided to spend an extra night in Marseille and just spend one night in Aix (handy direct bus back to MRS Airport).
