I feel like some steak tartare so I am going to pop over to Paris for the weekend. I know a couple of places but was wondering if anyone else had some tips on the best bistros or brasseries for tartare in town?

cheers!

Hi,
you got the - Bar à Vin - "le Nemrod" rue du cherche midi
it's near Montparnass and rue de Rennes...

Steack tartare are not the best ever, but the place is quite Frenchy ;-)

Thanks R1,
Will stay away from that place then.

Places that I've heard have a sort of reputation for Tartare are:

Bar des Théâtres
6, Avenue Montaigne, 8e
--
Brasserie du Théâtre
59, rue de Clichy, 9e
--
Le Sèvero
8, rue des Plantes, 14e
--
Le Petit Champenois
6, rue Fourcade, 15e
--
Cafe de l'Homme
17, place du Trocadéro, 16e
--
Brasserie Stella
133, rue Victor Hugo, 16e

Maybe someone has experience at one or some of these places (if not for the tartare then just generally)???

The Hippopotamus chain makes pretty good steak tartare if you want to find an easy location (Hippos are everywhere in Paris). Since it is a steakhouse chain, it has access to good beef.

Kerouac, do you know why the Hippopotamus chain chose that name? In Greek Hippo = horse, and potamos = river.

No, I don't have the slightest idea. I know that "hippopotamus" means "river horse". I would assume that since their logo shows a suitably chubby smiling hippo (probably a beef eater), it is no different than if they had chosen the name "Babar" for the restaurant chain (smiling chubby beaf eating elephant?).

Just looked at the website to see if there was any history listed. No, but I was surprised to see that they now have locations in Algeria, Morocco, Cyprus and Russia....

It’s hard to get a table at Le Sévero (wine bar) - only about 10 tables and they are always booked up.

I don’t know about the tartare in particular but their beef in general is excellent. The owner is a former butcher.

A few doors down is their annex: Le Bis du Sévero. They feature fish dishes but also serve the same top quality meat. I’m quite sure they offer tartare de boeuf here too. And it’s easier to get a table at the Bis.

Bon appétit!

Just had an excellent steak tartare at Le Petit Four, 4 r Auguste Vacquerie 75016 PARIS.

Not sure that it's the best in Paris, but it was better than a lot of tartares I've had at other places recently.

Thanks for your replies! And a great heads up about Le Sévero.

I have started a blog to try to put an end to this issue once and for all! :-D
