I will be in South France next month (mid May). I have heard that there are night mosquitoes + other insects - especially in the evenings. is this true? What precautions, medicines etc should I carry?

My trip will take me to Avignon and Toulouse.

You will be fine. Just don't let your room's window open when there is a light and it will be okay.

I agree with suburbian.
In addition, I'll add that France (continental) is a Malaria-free country.

For your own confort, you can even buy mosquito repellent devices that plug on the electrical outlet so you can sleep with your window open.
Have a good trip.

May is a bit early for mosquitoes but in any case the problem varies widely from location to location. They're not malarial so you you don't need any medicines except for some antihistamine cream to smear on any bites you might get. Those plug-in devices work well (even with a window open) and they and the little cartridges for them are on sale in most supermarkets and hardware shops.

Just a note: better use ammoniac (sp?) based products for insects' bites. The topical antihistamines can lead to other problems (too long to explain, but believe me, I do have a MD even I'm not working with patients since years ago :)) There is a good product called precisely "after bite" that I think is available in France (certainly it is here in Spain and in the US). Other products based on corticoids can be a good option too (and these can be used for burnings as well, so I usually carry a small tube when traveling). Ask at any pharmacy.

Other than that, as said above it should not be a big problem unless you're especially sensible to bites. Any mosquito-repellent lotion or device should be more than enough.

have a nice trip!

Mosquitoes can be a plague in Camargue, but May is a little early. The situation depends a lot on the weather, so you can not be sure for the summer months.

Get bitten by anything small - dab some vodka on it and the urge to scratch goes ...

Great tip I learnt in Estonia whilst being 'eaten' by some little blighters!
