Hi there,

I am planning a camping trip in Southern France with my 12 year old son. We will be traveling by public transport and are looking for campsites near public transport and ideally by a river. Preferably on the smaller side, but with enough other kids his age.

Thanks,
Inez

Hi
There are plenty options. Just some examples :
Take the train line from Toulouse to Figeac :
Laguepie is by Viaur river with a camping
Next stop, Najac is the same with Aveyron river

The train line from Bordeaux to Sarlac is aling Dordogne river and you can stop in Le Buisson, Siorac or Saint Cyprien.

The train line from Brive to Figeac crosses Dordogne river in Saint Denis les Martel (camping)

Thanks sjeanmarc1. Do you have any suggestions for the area around Lyons, Nimes, Montpellier. Those places are the easiest to get to with Eurostar so trying to find somewhere in that region. Sorry, I should have been more specific.

I will check out your suggestions though and see how easy it is to get there.

This summer, the high speed new line will be open all the way from Paris to Bordeaux. They plan to propose a direct train from London to Bordeaux.
In south east of France, I don't see options only by train. For example, Ardeche river will be with train then bus.

Not exactly rural, but close enough, there is a large campground on l'île de la Barthelasse in the Rhone River at Avignon, which is easily accessible by both TGV and regional trains. It's called Camping du pont d'Avignon because the famous bridge is clearly visible from the camp's shore and the view of the nearby Palais du papes and the rest of the walled city is remarkable. Here's a link, unfortunately through a commercial booker:

or the camp's own site: http://www.aquadis-loisirs.com/en/camping-du-pont-davignon/

I also suggest checking the Avignon tourist site which is always useful: https://www.getyourguide.com/-l14/?cmp=ga&campaignid=365325870&adgroupid=41067591528&targetid=kwd-35886080521&loc_physical_ms=9001070&matchtype=b&network=g&device=c&creative=176257909852&keyword=%2Bavignon%20%2Btourism%20%2Boffice&adposition=1t1&partner_id=FDBE4&gclid=CO_D1OH-gNMCFQK4wAodRTAPLA

Yes, I just found the Bordeaux route and it is much cheaper than going to Montpellier which was what I first had in mind. I will check out the trainline that runs along the river as I Iove riverside camping. Thanks for your suggestions!

Every town and village in France has a website. Each of those has information on municipal camping. Familiarize yourself with all of them that could be on the route you plan. They will always tell you how to reach the campsite by public transportation - train or bus. A map of France will show you where rivers are located. There are loads of them in the "south of France."

Thanks all for your suggestions. I have found a lovely small campsite by a river in Jumilhac le Grand, which is 12 km from the nearest railway station so a manageable taxi ride, but the owner has offered to collect us! It's a 15 min walk into town and they rent out bikes so it seems pretty perfect.
